The most influential book of my entire life

Nutritional Biochemistry, edited by Dr. M. Linder is an influential textbook. Some time ago, this book was provided to me for teaching a class of upper division students and graduate students in the field of nutrition. All of the students purchased this book. However, during the first week of teaching, it was apparent to me that the book was failing as a teaching device. The writing is clumsy. For example, concepts in metabolism are set forth by complicated diagrams with many arrows. These diagrams almost resemble topographical maps of mountain ranges. The Linder book is not alone in having this fault of attempting to "teach" a biochemical pathway by way of a complex diagram taking the form of multi-branched flow chart with ten to twenty arrows. Thus, my critique regarding this textbook "teaching" device is a general one.
Also, I noticed that many of the "facts" about chemistry, enzymology, metabolic pathways, regulation, and so on, were not correct. To reiterate this point, it is the case that the Linder book is filled with errors. And so, by the end of the week, I told my students that they could return the Linder book to the campus bookstore.
As a consequence, for each of the subsequent lectures for my course, I was forced to scramble for twelve solid hours to prepare each 1-hour lecture, and to draft accompanying handouts for my class. At the end of the semester, I had 400 pages of handouts. I submitted these to several publishers and my efforts were rewarded with contracts from three different publishing companies. I chose the best one (Academic Press). To make a long story short, a first edition and also a second edition of my nutrition book was published. And so, it can be seen that the Linder book turned out to be the most influential book in my life.

Outstanding even if outdated.

Although this book is about 20 years old and to my knowledge has not been released in an updated edition it is an excellent reference and still quite valid. I have Advanced Nutrition and Human Metabolism by Groff and Nutritional Biochemistry, by Brody, but I still prefer to refer to this book. So if you don't want to spend and exhorbitant amount of money and don't need the latest research which to some extent you can do yourself on the web, then look no further. You can pick this book up for less than $10.
