This is a very good book, but...

The approach that this book uses is inductive with a vengeance. You are thrown into reading real texts immediately. No vocabulary lists, no grammar points, just explaining what you see. So, it is more about what kind of a learner you are, inductive or deductive. I am mostly the latter and find the approach of this book extreme. So, I am not the right kind of beginner for this book. It would be the second book for me on this topic. Still, I must say that this a good book. The crux of the matter is whether this would be a first or second book for you which only depends on the type learner you are.

Incredibly helpful and accessible to most ages.

Manley does an impressive job with this remarkably accessible text at teaching, explaining, and reinforcing the understanding of some of the more common re-occuring phrases seen on real Egyptian Stelae and monuments. The title says for "complete beginners" and I do believe a complete beginner could hack their way through it, if they are a well-focused student and have a decent amount of patience. Learning any new language is challenging; learning a language that hasn't been spoken for a couple thousand years can be extremely challenging. This is a book on how to read real hieroglyphics, not simply a gift for tourists... Though, it wouldn't hurt a tourist to read it before a trip. The book is not overly demanding but it IS challenging and can become easily overwhelming when first entering each new chapter. But fear not, because Manley writes in a voice that helps one pause, take a breath, step back to the basics and look for things you've already learned in previous chapters to help put together the new pieces and solve the text. Having purchased Allen's 'Middle Egyptian' and E.A. Wallis Budge's 'The Egyptian Book of the Dead' I would have to say that Manley's text is by far the most accessible I've read, and I find that I still reference it often- just to feel a bit of the reward of working on a familiar text. A slight disclaimer for this review; I'm not an official scholar of Ancient Egypt or Egyptology. I don't work in a museum, and I have not yet visited the ruins... Hieroglyphics has just been a passion and hobby of mine since I was twelve years old. I had a lot of fun learning the basics with this book, and now as an adult I would happily recommend it to anyone of any age who is serious about learning more than the average person about this amazing ancient writing system.

Excellent Introductory Book

This is a great introductory book with a novel approach to teaching an ancient and beautiful language.
The typical hieroglyph teaching books usually saddle the learner with tedious grammar rules that take the fun out of learning. No doubt, these formal books are necessary after a certain point - when one needs to move on to further formal study.
Bill Manley's approach is different. He teaches hieroglyphs in much the same way that we all learned our native languages by recognizing patterns and sounds to make sense of conveyed meaning. From the first lesson, you will be reading stela inscriptions from the 2200 BC tomb of Mereri. It's a fresh approach that can yield results quickly as you go through museum exhibits.
Don't expect the learning to be easy, however. You still have to memorize many details and practice and work hard to attain competency in reading monuments. The book facilitates this with short lessons and frequent prompts for exercises.
