For those who dare, a fantastic read lurks within

When an author includes a warning that their book might be too strongly sexual, too strongly offensive, that makes me want to find out more about it. And when the author is already a favorite of mine, that means an instant 1-click and read.
These stories from Carolyn Jewel are short, some almost too short, but they are all, without question, so damn good. The most outrageous story is probably the first one (Inigo the Magician) and if you can make it through that tale unscathed, then you are in for a satisfying dark ride all the way to the very end. I've always enjoyed how Carolyn Jewel can turn an otherwise innocuous scene into one seething with sexual desire. But these particular stories show that when her true writing id is completely unleashed, there's no stopping her from going as far as any other writer might dare...and beyond. I only hope there are more of these dark tales hiding somewhere in her bottom desk drawer, just waiting to be sprung on an unsuspecting (and for those of us who enjoy such things - grateful) public.

Dark, beautiful, thought-provoking

Whispers No. 1 is a collection of five short stories. They are dark, bittersweet and decadent like bites of really specialized gourmet chocolate. The writing is beautiful and thoughtful. Some of the stories may be uncomfortable to some readers, all of them tend to haunt you after reading.
Like any collection of stories, this was a mixed bag. I liked some better than others.
"Ingo the Magician"
An evil magician controls a demon and then gets his just-desserts when his two victims join forces. This one was my favorite -- because the short story is visceral -- you can feel the danger in the atmosphere, the need for revenge, the tenderness and fragility that is also part of the characters, the strange bond between the two main characters. And the description of the demon was excellent.
"Demon Lover"
A twenty-seven year old woman is sheltered from people and life until she catches the eye of a powerful man, which of course leads to her seduction. This was the tamest of the lot and the plot is one that is pretty common. The writing was yet again lush and seductive.
"My Goblin Boyfriend"
The heroine gets herself a Goblin lover. I loved the humor that appears in the first part of the story and would love to see this one expanded into a more complete plot and story. It left me intrigued...I want MORE!
"Constance"
Constance Ashley's depraved father controls her. One man loves her & gets another man to seduce her, so she is ruined and available. I found this one the hardest to read because the heroine's past includes an issue that I feel very strongly about, and throughout the story -- from her father to the man she finally marries -- she's manipulated.
"The Wild"
This was an interesting take on werewolf lovers without much of the sugarcoating you generally see in most PNR stories featuring werewolves. I wish I could get to know the heroine more -- to feel concerned for her, understand where she's coming from (instead of being told by a narrator I don't quite trust). Again, I think if this story was expanded, the characters rounded out and made more accessible to readers, I think this could be an amazing story...sort of a literary PNR in the vein of Sharon Shinn's Shifting Circle series.
This was the story that really crossed some sexual boundaries (beast form sex, foreign object, restraints and pain). So heed the author's warning before reading!

Not Exactly Dark Erotica

Five short stories in 98 pages. Too short really to give a rating for most of them. (If you pin me down, a 3 star rating may seem appropriate for what you get knowing complete stories aren't included. These shorts are like snapshots. Kerplunk!)
My Impression - Not dark erotica! It wasn't really erotic. There's lots of unusual sex. I think a couple of the books could translate into monster porn images.
"Ingo the Magician"
An evil magician controls a demon with devastating results for one couple. Too short a tale for me to connect with characters, especially the heroine. Rape, BDSM
"Demon Lover"
A twenty-seven year old woman is sheltered from people and life until she catches the eye of a powerful man. MY FAVORITE! I wanted more! David Nathaniel, the "depraved and wicked" man, draws women into his web like butterflies. The heroine lives for the moment. She draws him out. Want. More!
"My Goblin Boyfriend"
The heroine has a thing for big men. Goblins make the best lovers. It's a 'bumpy' ride. Sparse story.
"Constance"
Constance Ashley's depraved father controls her. One man loves her. Another man seduces her. It was a disturbing story to read. No matter Contance's choices she remained a victim in my eyes.
"The Wild"
A BDSD story heavy on the S&M with use of foreign object. Beast-form sex that some may find disturbing. Not my cuppa.
Final Thoughts - "Demon Lover" is my favorite of the bunch. "Constance" disturbed me, not with its sex, but what felt like the victimization of the heroine. Heads up to the squeamish! You may want to avoid "Wild."
