Very Disappointing

I was very disappointed by the quality of this book. Given some critical review and editing by both the authors and editors, the next edition of this book could be a very useful primer on homeland security. This current edition, however, was poorly edited, minimal effort (if any) went into source verification, and the authors made judgments/drew conclusions that that were poorly supported at best. Although I am tempted to provide examples of the mistakes, poor documentation, unverified sourcing, and out of date information, I do not wish to publicly embarrass Gaines, Kappeler, or the editors of the book. I do feel compelled to warn students, if required to purchase this book, to read it with a very critical eye. I would also encourage any teachers/professors/instructors to do the same before requiring it for your classes.

Required reading

The course I took required this textbook. The textbook was very informative. HOWEVER, I've read tens of textbooks relating to criminal justice and this one was probably the driest I've ever had to read. Retaining the information was difficult because it honest to God is the most boring book I've ever had to lay eyes on.

Very dated reference but does provide very detailed insight on terrorism as it relates to evolution of homeland security. Copyright is 2012 although not much information on homeland security programs after 2010. Could have done without subjective/subliminal references to what is a blatant [liberal] viewpoint from the authors. Expect more objectivity and a "just the facts" approach from college level reference material. Wait, ...what?

Each has explored, from his own special standpoint, the dynamic potentialities of the deep unconscious, the immense creative and destructive forces latent in the human psyche.In the present age these potentialities have been used principally in their destructive aspect, as a means of achieving absolute power. The purpose of this book is to investigate whether and how they can be used creatively. The author shows reason for believing that modern psychological techniques have an immense new field of application in the fuller and more satisfactory living of life. As he sees it, depth psychology and religion, far from being opposed to one another, are complimentary approaches to the same central reality: the potentially creative forces at work in man. What is needed at the present time is that the discoveries of depth psychology should be set upon a scientific basis and, at the same time, related positively to the age-old insights of religion. Insofar as this can be done, he suggests, the peoples of the world can find a new fellowship and the present 'time of troubles' be outlived. He does not venture to predict whether or not these possibilities will be realized. His object in writing is to show that they exist.

Valuable.

I've been enjoying this volume, but--so far--have discovered what I consider two faults. To wit, the author omits the critically important figures of Dr. George Groddeck and Dr. Wilhelm Reich in this movement. And, he speaks of a weakness of Freud's in being excessively "reductionist." Better would have been to fault Freud with his excessively intellectual ("analytical") approach. It is also one which is deterministic (and a largely pessimistic one).

I'm going to amend my comment about "reductionism." In ONE place, Martin refers to Freud's sexual reductionimsm, to which I heartily concur. Others in the Depth Movement, such as Dr. Groddeck, considered the id to be much more than only sexual in nature, but a kind've life-force, and the source of creativity and other things of great value. BTW, Groddeck was the one who came up with the term "id."

Yet, overall, this is a good survey of Depth Psychology.

Fun, interesting, bizarre & wonderful book!

Beginning with my husband & now including my teenaged son, I have been purchasing a new/different edition of the Uncle John's Bathroom Reader every year as a Christmas gift for 20 years or more. Not to be too graphic, but this book is kept on a shelf in the restroom b/c it has a lot of interesting facts, stories, oddball statistics, origins of names/words/colloquialisms, & much, much more. It's easy to pick up and put down - you can read a few tidbits to pass the time w/o getting hooked into a longer story or novel. I don't believe there's a single one of these readers that I've given to my husband that hasn't been read cover-to-cover. (It gets read outside of the bathroom, too, but it's called the "Bathroom Reader" for good reason!) Many of the tidbits are fun to share w/ others and are interesting conversation starters outside of the restroom. I will continue buying these books as long as my husband and son continue to read them.

Splendid, as usual.

You guys are amazing, and you still have yet to read about what happened at Cape Kennedy or Canaveral. What are the items of major interest with 1974; not just Nixon, however I would love your interpretation of exactly what went down in the longer reading section. It's just interesting that several very tantalizing things happened in 1974; I'd be interested if any astrology buffs had anything or psychics or pop culture gurus would tap into a multitude or plethora of fascinating happenstance that occurred. Just a (million dollar) idea from a dedicated reader. You guys are f%$?ing awesome

DO NOT BUY THIS FOR YOUR KINDLE!!!

Just like the other "1 star" reviews, don't buy the Kindle Edition of this book. What is delivered is not Uncle John's UNCANNY.. I have complained to Amazon Customer Service twice. I was told they would remove it until the problem was fixed but they haven't done that. I've wasted a lot of $12 trying to get the right one.
