About the Author
Dr. Gerald Tharp is a retired professor of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He signed the contract for this title back in 1973, with Burgess Publishing Co. in Minneapolis, and the title was later passed to Macmillan Inc. of New York, which was succeeded by Prentice-Hall for the 8th edition in 2001. The 8th edition was the last time that Tharp actively participated in the revision process.

David Woodman joined the project in the 8th edition and is now fully responsible for the manuscript revision, though he consults with Dr. Tharp on occasion. David has used this manual in his own lab for over a decade and has a solid grasp of the content, style, and technology in the text, as well as the trends and challenges that face this market.

As with every Debbie Ford book, this one will make you think and dig into your life, and it will empower you to make new and healthy choices for the better. Each chapter in this book offers a new question to ask when making decisions that impact your future. A simple concept, yet profoundly impactful. As I worked through the questions, it was almost like Debbie was there beside me, like a friend urging me to make new choices that would transform my life.

A much needed book

I wish I had been given this book years ago, the way Debbie Ford writes is clear and straight to the point no sugar coating here. From this book it is clear that everyone opinion of common sense does differ I can relate to how she uses basic practical advice. It does offer food for though and in its own way the way a person looks in the mirror and what they see may not be what the person really wants. I suggest this book for anyone who feels they are stuck in life and need guidance.

So simple to read, but so much food for thought!

The Right Questions is a small (180 pages) book with monumental potential to change your life. The easy part is reading the book. Much harder will be integrating the right questions (there are 10) into my life and decisionmaking process. The book is a very easy read, with short chapters and great real-life examples to illustrate what a difference each question could make in leading you to your best life. Some of the questions are real heavy-hitters, but Debbie does a good job of breaking them down and explaining them in a way that can be easily understood and digested. Perhaps it is because it was the last thing I read in the book, but the question that impacted me the greatest was "Am I choosing from my divinity or am I choosing from my humanity?" TO be honest, I was a bit put off by this question at first but, by the end, I believe it was my favorite of the book.

What Debbie's book left me with (whether she intended it to or not) was the message that most of us have the potential to do and be so much more than we are right now...and that, if we will only frame our decisions with the right questions, we have a chance to be the best version of ourselves.

Taking his work as the point of reference, this book not only provides an illuminating history of political science, told via Dahl and his critics, it also offers a revealing analysis as to what progress we have made in our thinking on pluralism and democracy, and what progress we could make, given the epistemological constraints of the social sciences. Above and beyond this, the development and the problems of pluralism and democracy are explored in the context of the process of modernization. About the Author
Hans Blokland is Professor at the Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany. He has held teaching positions at Erasmus University Rotterdam and Utrecht University. He was visiting scholar at Yale University and Manchester University and fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of the Arts and Sciences. His work was awarded, among others, the Pieter de la Court-prize of the Royal Netherlands Academy of the Arts and Sciences.

Best reference history

I agree with a previous reviewer that there are some editorial problems with this English translation/revision of Conte's work (e.g. "Revelations" for the last book of the Bible -- most literate people know that the book is titled "Revelation"). Nonetheless this is the best available reference history of Latin literature, replete with facts as well as appreciation. Coverage extends well into the Middle Ages, with brief discussions of even minor figures. This book is clearly to be preferred over the Latin volume of the Cambridge History of Classical Literature, which (as the preface to Conte's book says) is just a collection of essays "varying in approach and critical acumen...while presupposing the reader's command of all the elementary facts".

This is an outstanding reference work which covers literary history and historiography. The book begins by examining early Latin laws, treaties, Fasti and Annales, and ends by examining Gregory of Tours and Bede. The book is grouped into five broad chronological periods and examines some of the major authors individually and groups others by genre, such as the chapter on Neoteric poetry and Catullus, which is placed under the period of the Late Republic. In writing about an individual author or a genre, Conte uses the same format which covers the Life, Works and Sources, and he summarizes the manuscript tradition. Each author and his works are placed in historical and literary context. Conte also summarizes the major works of the authors, as well as the current state of textual and literary criticism relating to those works. Each section also has a short, detailed, annotated bibliography of translations, commentaries and other secondary sources in English, Italian, French and German. This book was translated from Italian to English, with Conte making some key additions for English readers, and is a joy to read.

With the marked increase in life expectancy achieved during the past century, we can expect that the elderly population will continue to grow disproportionately during the next 50 years. The oldest of the elderly, persons 85 years of age or older, now represent the fastest-growing group not only in developed countries as a whole, but also in emergency departments, intensive care units, and hospital wards. In recent years, much has been learned about the physiologic and pathologic consequences of aging and the varied clinical manifestations of disease in the elderly. The spectrum of illness in middle-aged adults is similar to that in older adults, but the prevalence of various entities differs. In elderly people with diminished functional reserve and coexisting illness, an acute disease often causes perturbations in multiple systems. Clinical presentations may be relatively nonspecific, and mortality is almost always higher than in younger patients. Consequently, diagnostic and therapeutic planning for older patients must be tailored to meet their differing needs and objectives. Unfortunately, there are comparatively few off-the-shelf works a busy clinician can refer to when caring for acutely ill elderly patients. Acute Emergencies and Critical Care of the Geriatric Patient will help to fill this void.

This book consists of four sections that cover the basic principles of critical care, topics related to surgical emergencies and medical emergencies, and special issues. A strength of the book is that each of its 25 chapters can serve as a stand-alone reference for rapid review. Yet the text flows nicely from chapter to chapter, making it easy to garner a comprehensive survey of this area of medicine. The chapters are consistently organized, with clear headings in outline style. As a multiauthored book, it benefits from strict adherence to this unified organization. There are many easy-to-read summary tablews as well as numerous figures that enhance the text. The chapters are well referenced, are organized according to system, and provide useful, though somewhat broad, surveys. Throughout, several thematic issues -- including reduced functional reserve in various organ systems (homeostenosis) and atypical or muted clinical presentations -- and an emphasis on general principles combine to form a cohesive and useful work.

The first section of the book, "Principles of Geriatric Critical Care," focuses on older patients in the emergency department and critical care unit, with particular attention to geriatric pharmacology and the unique nursing needs of the elderly. The second section, "Surgical Emergencies," provides a review of preoperative evaluation, emergency anesthesia, common injuries, the acute abdomen, and vascular catastrophes. Although it is solid and filled with interesting teaching pearls, this section suffers somewhat in comparison with the other sections, especially because of a tendency toward oversimplification of complex concepts.

The chapters in the section entitled "Medical Emergencies" are very well written and provide an outstanding survey of internal medicine in the acute care of elderly patients. Although the chapters overlap somewhat, they are generally complementary and reinforce important facts and concepts. The final section in the book, "Special Issues of Aging," deals with a variety of other important topics related to geriatric acute care, such as elder abuse and acute loss of vision.

This book would be a very good supplement to a complete textbook of medicine. Consistently emphasizing relevant general principles, it will enhance readers' understanding of many problems in the acute care of elderly patients. It will be an excellent resource for all those who care for the elderly in acute care settings.

Unlike many histories written regarding the Recapture and Liberation of Guam, this author does not editorialize and has an overabundance of footnotes to support and document his writings. He also introduces the reader to the people who actually fought the war, not just the 'Brass". One weakness in this treatise is a lack of discussion regarding the local population and their efforts to support the war effort.

A very fine history that more Americans should know about. The only problem with Ebook histories is that it is difficult and time consuming to refer back to maps on earlier pages.......and the fact that the maps are not expandable on the device so that seeing the finer print is difficult or impossible.

Another great story about Jack and Marin

Another great story about Jack and Marin. Jack meets a new magical creature (Bob) what lives in his shop and brings good luck. Bob's friend has a scary entity living in his attic, so Bob asks Jack and Marin for help.
This time Jack is in danger because of Essence of dragon...an old ancient dragon is trying to possess him...Marin has to ask her father for help and Jack has to decide if he's willing to sacrifice himself to give an ancient dragon peace.
I've enjoyed each one of these espisodes ...Jack and Marin seem like the old friends you haven't seen in a while but catch up with really fast.
This story is a little different from the others but just as compelling...Throughly enjoyed it

Cute short story-love the little critter, Bob. This is the continuing saga of Jack and Marin (a dragon) and their adventures solving different supernatural problems. I particularly like the playful exchanges between Jack an Marin-you sometimes wonder who is working for whom. Cannot wait for the next episode. Thanks for free episodes in exchange for a review whether good or bad. I ll say there was a problem with pdf it kept repeating a page about 4 times, so it made it confusing to read until I caught on to the problem. But other than that, cute story with no erotic stuff.

When the white furry rodent like creature appears to Jack in his office, he is surprised when Marin informs him that he has a request for Jack. Seems there is a scary something living in the attic of a neighboring store and he was hoping Jack could get rid of it since his friend also lives in that store. Jack certainly didn't expect the scary something to be so bad that Marin is terrified of it. What frightens a dragon! This is the 4th episode in the Spirelli Paranormal Investigations series, and the stories keep getting better! Looking forward to the new episode to be published in August.

Ground breaking in its time, now a period piece.

Some people swear by this book and the author gets a lot of credit for putting Reiki in the hands of more people as its founder, Mikao Usui, intended. Ms. Stein had to come by her training piecemeal and has clearly done more with hers than others with more thorough Western "Traditional" training. To me it seems unfortunate though that she mixes Reiki up with her own home brew of goddess worship. In my opinion that's misleading, however unintentional. Not only is Wicca and its derivatives NO part of any Japanese Buddhist path to enlightenment, but one of Mikao Usui's greatest achievements may have been to keep Reiki from dumbing down and turning into just another religious practice. In Reiki one experiences truth, not submits to indoctrination. Everyone who add bells and whistles and rust undercoatings to Reiki just does not get how or more importantly why Japanese culture places such a premium on elegant simplicity. Power is hidden in Reiki's original simplicity. Less is more. More is mere excess baggage. Most of what you pay for in many Reiki classes in the West today would be unfamiliar to it's founder. Only in such an atmosphere could this book sell very well and it does little to clear it. I believe she errs out of innocence here. I found her manual for teachers far more useful.

Beautiful, well explained and illustrated introduction and reference.

I was attuned to all three levels of Usui Reiki (Master level in Usui), and given some materials then, but the Master (Mistress?) who attuned me also encouraged learning from every source possible. I bought this and I'm glad I did. Stein researches and gives history and her unique viewpoint and experiences. She is also all about practical instruction and suggestions, showing and telling about the Reiki symbols, et cetera. I find myself referring back here often. When a Reiki 1 I attuned asked for guidance on giving her first treatment session, I ended up discussing the positions and procedure based largely on Stein's illustrations and description (the Reiki 1 has a copy of this book as well).
Some Reiki folks who follow a more traditional (American-traditional that is) approach dislike sharing the information this way. They think it should be limited and controlled. I agree with Stein's assessment that the need for healing in the world is greater than ever before and we need all the healers in action we can get. The book itself states it is not a substitute for attunement, so any criticism on that basis is misplaced. It is a beautifully done introduction and reference work that every Reiki (and those interested in becoming one) would do well to read and keep handy.

One of the go to guides for Reiki

'Essential Reiki' is truly essential if you want to learn about Reiki. While everything must be taken with a grain of salt to go with your own practice, the philosophy is open and varied. Everything is clearly explained, from the history, philosophies, and actual practices. Though controversial, the symbols are shown so a complete education can be had. While the practice of Reiki was exclusive for many decades, it is clear in our place and time that the earth needs more loving energy and support, and by spreading the complete knowledge of Reiki, more people can learn to practice it and help to heal our earth.
