Interesting, smart, and entertaining script. Adams draws some interesting comparisons between a distant (and fictionalized) history and the sexually vibrant sixties. Easily produce-able, and also great scenes for acting classes. Read it, and keep it in your library.

About the Author
Colonel Randy Gibb has served in the United States Air Force since 1986 after earning his commission and Bachelor of Science degree as a Distinguished Graduate from the United States Air Force Academy. He has flown more than 3,400 hours in the following aircraft: Instructor/Evaluator pilot Northrop T-38 Talon, Instructor/Evaluator pilot Lockheed C-5 Galaxy, Instructor pilot T-3 Firefly, Aircraft Commander Learjet C-21, Instructor/Evaluator pilot Raytheon Beechcraft 400 T-1 Jayhawk, and Instructor T-52 Diamond 40. Colonel Gibb's graduate education includes Master of Science in Engineering, Industrial Engineering - Human Factors, Arizona State University, 1996, Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies, Naval Command and Staff College, Newport RI, 2000, and a PhD in Industrial Engineering - Human Factors, Arizona State University, 2007. Col. Gibb had two flying unit commander positions: he led the 84th Airlift Flight, Peterson AFB, C-21 unit as well as the 99th Flying Training Squadron, Randolph AFB, T-1 unit. He is currently an Assistant Professor and Deputy Department Head, Behavioral Sciences & Leadership Department, United States Air Force Academy teaching classes in human factors, engineering psychology, and introductory psychology. Rob Gray is an Associate Professor and Department Head in the Department of Applied Psychology at Arizona State University. He obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from York University, Canada. After earning his Ph.D. he worked for three years as a Research Scientist with Nissan Research & Development conducting research on driving safety. Since 2002 he has worked as a part-time Research Psychologist with the U.S. Air Force working primarily on flight simulator design. At ASU he directs the Perception & Action Laboratory which investigates visual cues used by pilots for tasks such as landing and low-altitude flight. He has authored 36 journal articles, 17 conference papers, and 7 book chapters. In 2007 he received the American Psychological Association (APA) Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to Psychology and the APA Division 21 Earl Alluisi Award for Early Career Achievement in the Field of Applied Experimental & Engineering Psychology. Lauren Scharff is the Director for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and a Professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at the United States Air Force Academy. Prior to that she was a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Stephen F. Austin State University, where she worked since 1993. She completed her Ph.D. in Human Experimental Psychology (Visual Perception) in December, 1992 from the University of Texas at Austin. She teaches introductory psychology, research methods, biopsychology, and perception courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and has won several teaching awards. Her research interests have included depth perception, visual search, text readability, and the human factors of web site design, although her students continually shift her research efforts to new directions. She has also collaborated with researchers at NASA-Ames Research Center to create a metric to predict text readability, including conditions that apply to head-up displays.

The closest thing to a skeleton key to Wallace Stevens

I've read Stevens' letters. I've read "The Necessary Angel." I've read Vendler and tried to read Bloom. I've even made it partway through Richardson's dense two-volume biography. And, of course, I've read the poems--over and over and over for forty years. This book comes the closest to describing exactly what's going on in Stevens' mind. Critchley's analysis brings everything into focus for me. I knew Critchley was on the right track after reading his first chapter, which is nothing less than a crib sheet of Stevens' brain. Furthermore, it's full of penetrating questions such as this: "What is it about the particular meditative poetic form that [Stevens] developed that is able to carry genuine philosophical weight and yet which is impossible to translate into prose?" Critchley devotes much of the book to solving this riddle.

Someone Grew An Epistemology/Pineapple Artichoke!

The rationale for this Amazon review stems from the fact that Amazon recommended "Things Merely Are" by Simon Critchley and I bit. But it turned out that this short volume is well-written, even lucid,[his choice of audience extends beyond the academy]and focuses on the inverse relationship of imagination and reality as found in "The Snowman":"Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is." Critchley has a strong reading of Stevens and develops a theory of how poetry works which has a clarity unknown to H Bloom in "The Poems of Our Climate." "Things Merely Are" is a from my perspective a welcome addition to the conversation about Stevens and is of the quality produced by Helen Vendler.

It tells me what it isn't.

It's a good book, but short : the first 90 pages are about Stevens but the remaining 20, the films of Terrence Malick are discussed.
(Keats or Shelley would have said that I had paid for a pamphlet only ... at nearly 30 bucks, Byron would have laughed)

But it's useful because some points are made which Helen Vendler does not make even in her Introduction to her 'Extended Wings' book. (You'd think that she'd have covered everything, there, wouldn't you ... even when she says in her shorter tome 'Words Chosen Out Of Desire' that Stevens's titles do not have any semantic relation to a poem's actual content. (Well, glory be !)
(Actually, I have only read recently, that WS thought that he did title his poems semantically true to the content.)

Critchley uses general words, like 'anti-realism' : Stevens's philosophical position cannot be 'assimilated to ...' he says ; he thinks, too, that Romanticisms are a fallback to failures, (my words) and that R. is the folly of private sexual intimidations, (my words, again, but I reckon C. means as much.
PS he does mention 'anxious atheisms' too)
His book is best read in collaboration with the best - as all books on Stevens must, I reckon : Vendler, as mentioned, plus Longenbach's Historicist version (that is, if you want politics posing as analysis - but that book is still not a bad one) and perhaps Frank Kermode as an introduction ... but I like George Lensing's, 'A Poet's Growth'. It's clear and distinct ... and it tells me why Robert Frost is, really, as good a poet.

Good enough

As of 2009 there are not many alternatives to learn the powerful programming language Erlang and the OTP (Open Telecom Platform). This is THE book written by the designer and implementor of Erlang, Joe Armstrong and he seems to know what he is talking about. High quality humour may not be one of Armstrong's strengths but when it comes to finding attractive examples he shines using his favorite language and platform.

This may not be the perfect book, it has its problems such as promising that some things will be pointed out but the chapter ends without fulfilling it. A few minor frustrations aside the book provides a very good overview of the most important points of Erlang with enough breadth and depth. The chapter where Armstrong talks about a simple then adding transaction semantics, fault tolerance, hot code swapping, etc. is a kind of tour de force. Another good application is a Shoutcast server implementation in just a few lines of code. It would be very good to compare this example to Peter Seibel's Practical Common Lisp [1].

If you want to learn more about this kind of programming, I'd definitely suggest reading 'Concepts, Techniques, and Models of Computer Programming' [2] which shows the Oz programming language and the Mozart platform and teaches the fundamentals of message-passing concurrency and network-transparent distributed programming.

Finally it must be repeated that Erlang has a very high-quality VM along with mature libraries for concurrency and reliability. If you want to experience industrial-strength distributed and / or multicore applications that scales well then it would be only wise to follow the advice of Joe Armstrong.

Warning: If you are not exposed to Lisp, Prolog, Haskell, Oz, etc. beforehand be careful for a different kind of syntax and semantics. You'll have unlearn a few concepts to understand the power of new concepts.

Good, But Not Great

There aren't a lot of Erlang books out there, so if you want to learn Erlang, you need this book.

However, I found the writing style a bit preachy. The organization of the book needs work, as the author is constantly referring to topics he hasn't covered yet. I also found that the index needs a lot of work, as it's missing quite a few topics that I know are in the book. The API reference also is missing some functions, which I thought was odd.

This book does a good job in promoting Erlang's ability to do concurrency well. I was hoping to get more functional programming style and mind set from the book, though.

All in all a good book to have if you want Erlang, but you'll need more if you want to really dive into functional programming or if you want a complete Erlang reference.

Functional introduction

To most of us, functional programming is either an academic pursuit, or a fun university pastime. However, with the trends towards multi-core and distributed computing, this paradigm is making a comeback, resulting in a lot of dignified "I told you so" arguments, which completely miss the point. It is not about one style versus the other, but rather about adapting the best of both worlds.

Erlang is pure functional language, and Joe Armstrong does great job of introducing the reader to the concepts, underlying libraries, and provides several non-trivial examples: IRC-like service, SHOUTcast server, and a full text-indexing search engine. You don't need to have any prior knowledge of the language or functional programming as a whole, the writing reads very easily, and you'll be up and running in no time.

I can't say that I'm writing Erlang programs all of the sudden, but I can say with confidence that I've picked up some very important architectural principles and an appreciation for the messaging-passing architecture. Great book, and highly recommended for any programmer.

Remarkable education

Dr. Corey Thompson chronicles the 40 year teaching career of a Milwaukee, Wisconsin
4th grade teacher who for the past 18 years has taken his public school class to
Denmark for a two week school experience in a different culture. The impact
of their experience abroad is described by students and parents. The entire
year's curriculum is focused on this experience, from learning Danish language
and song to geography and math. Lasting relationships between many of the
500 students and their host families have developed, with many return
trips to Milwaukee by Danish families. The story demonstrates what one
determined and committed teacher can accomplish, with many specifics
about the details of organizing the undertaking. Inspiring!

This book is beautifully written by Dr. Thompson, a former student of Mark Horowitz. I really liked that he showed how Mark, a public school teacher in Milwaukee, WI, does not teach to the test, but instead takes a holistic approach to teaching his fourth grade class. They go on a trip to Denmark towards the end of each year and use the trip as their focus throughout the year - yes, fourth graders. The children in his class learn some Danish and a lot about the culture before they go. It seems as if everything they learn (across the curriculum) can be incorporated in planning for the trip. I love that he has such a large focus on something so special to the kids throughout the year. Dr. Thompson makes it very clear that Mark has touched a vast majority of his students' lives. This trip changes them. I can only imagine how much they grow throughout the year! Some of these children have grown up to be teachers and Mark has had a great deal of student teachers throughout the years, as well. The "ripple" that he has made truly amazes me. I highly recommend this book to anyone involved in an educational setting (teachers, pre-service teachers, parents, grandparents...), because I know Mark's classroom is the type of classroom I would want my child to be part of. In this book you see how Mark has changed the way many teachers who have had the opportunity to be in his classroom teach in their own classrooms. There stories are very interesting and worth the read! There goes that ripple! :)

Woolly and pompous, an interesting subject ruined in pseuds-corner-esque drivel

The author seems to have made a career out of self-indulgent waffle. This book is badly written, woolly, contrived and very pompous. The role of the enlightenment in advancing in geography is not complicated, yet this book does a great job of confusing the heck out of the subject.
