As a Twin Peaks fan who read the book after the series ended, I knew the answer to the show's central question. So I didn't really read this book as a mystery, or a source for hints/clues (it does provide them!) so I can imagine the book would be even better if the reader doesn't know who killed Laura Palmer.

The book is not for the faint of heart. It's even more graphic and violent than the most frightening moments on the TV show. It's extremely disturbing in some parts I would not recommend for anyone with a sensitive stomach or anyone under the age of 15-16. But it's very well-written, and provides a greatly desired insight into Laura, one of my favorite television show characters of all time. As if my heart didn't ache with pity for her enough after the show, my chest felt like it was going to explode with sorrow after I finished this book.

There was no happy ending for Laura Palmer. Actually, there really was no happy story at all for Laura Palmer.

A Great Companion to "Twin Peaks"!

In "The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer", Jennifer Lynch, daughter of "Twin Peaks" co-creator David Lynch, examines Laura Palmer's life and fall into darkness from the age of twelve until a few days before the series begins. Lynch manages to craft a story that not only ties in with the overall television series, but also explores Laura in her own right as a full character, rather than an enigma of whom the audience receives glimpses in the show. Those unfamiliar with the show may find details of the book hard follow, though Lynch, though Laura's voice, provides background when necessary and in a manner one might expect to find in a diary. Like the other tie-in book, "The Autobiography of F.B.I. Special Agent Dale Cooper: My Life, My Tapes", this explores how one of the main characters became who they were at the time of the show, although, in Laura's case, it necessarily follows a much darker path.

I am an old Peakie from way back when. I remember loving the series more than anything I had ever seen on TV. I jumped at the new chance to DVR them all and start over again. This diary really changes the entire picture and perspective of what was really going on. Really pulls it together and makes much more sense. Rewatching at the same time now I could understand why things were the way they were. So glad I went ahead with the purchase.

Riding in Cars with Boys is my all time favorite movie! It shows how love and life aren't always filled with flowers and happiness. A few things that threw me off with this book:

1. Its length. I truly thought it would be longer than it was.
2. It was completely DIFFERENT than the movie (and the author *who the story is based off of* directed / produced the movie!)

It was a good book. But I would much rather stick with the movie than the book on this one. And that's saying something coming from me because I usually prefer the book over the movie (s).

One of my favorites

This was probably one of the best stories for women, I have ever read. I don't think there is a woman out there who couldn't relate to what this girl/woman went through in her life. The way this woman pursued her dreams no matter what life dished out to her. How she came to realize the things she was doing wrong without someone constantly telling her, even though they did, and how she took credit for the things she did right. Fantastic read!

Great 2nd book of series

William and Rafe's story is a great addition to this series. I really enjoyed reading it.

The Kindle version has a some misspelled or wrong words used throughout it which didn't stop me from reading. The third book is on Theo and Darcey and I will definitely download it as soon as I'm done with posting this review.

I only enjoyed this book. Needs a little editing the mistakes start to take you away from the story. Mostly the telling of the story through every characters POV, started to grate on me. Was not sucked in enough to want to read the next installment. Thank you.

About the Author

David K. Hayes, Ph.D. has over 35 years of experience in the field of hospitality management and education. Dr. Hayes initiated the hospitality management program at Texas Tech University. He has held faculty positions at Purdue University and the University of Houston’s Conrad Hilton College of Hotel Administration; as well as the position of Vice President of the Educational Institute of the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AH&LA). In 2005, Dr. Hayes formed Panda Professionals Hospitality Management and Training, (www.pandapros.com); a training resources company that develops customized hospitality education-related computer simulations, print publications, and seminars. Dr. Hayes is a prolific author, having published over a dozen textbooks, including versions translated into Chinese, Portuguese, Croatian and Spanish. In addition to his Ph.D., Dr. Hayes earned the hospitality industry certification of Food Management Professional (FMP) from the National Restaurant Association (NRA) where he has served as a consultant on the ManageFirst program. He also has earned the Certified Food and Beverage Executive (CFBE) and Certified Hospitality Administrator (CHA) designations from the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Dr. Hayes received his Bachelor of Science (BS), and Masters of Science (MS), degrees in Hospitality Management and his Ph.D. degree in Educational Administration from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana.

An Unsettling and Entertaining Story

Michelle Dowling feels great about the new job she just landed with Corporate Financial. It doesn't take long to realize though that they expect more out of their employees than any other company. They also seem to possess an unusual hold over their workers, and the clients they consult with. All of a sudden Michelle finds herself involved in a situation way over her head. At the same time, businesses across the nation--who are all linked by a common thread--start taking advantage of their employees and begin treating them like property.

I've read other books that JF Gonzalez helped write, but this was my first time reading a solo work of his. I really enjoyed it and will search out more of his novels now. This book will make you angry at times (in a good way), and think twice about your job and some of your coworkers. If you ever encounter anyone with a blank face that states "This is what I do", or see someone from HR show up at your house unexpectedly, RUN!

A Conspiracy Theorist's Wet Dream

While I was reading THE CORPORATION, I kept thinking of Bentley Little. This novel is very much in the same vein as Little's books. In fact, I would call it a quasi-blend of THE ASSOCIATION and THE STORE. Gonzalez's novel has that same feel and same dread running through its heart; the mood is paranoia and hopelessness. With all the problems in the recent economy and employees feeling stuck or semi-stuck in jobs they should be "lucky to have", the book can also be considered timely. (Or at least timely when it was published as opposed to when I read it.)

The story follows Michelle Dowling as she finds a dream job at Corporate Financial Consultants: excellent pay, generous benefits and the ability to start planning her future with her fianc�. However, she starts to realize that her new company has its fingers in its employee's personal lives a bit more than normal. And that their control over employees is expanding. Michelle quickly finds herself fighting to maintain her privacy while not knowing who to trust.

While Gonzalez did his regular awesome job with his characters and making them come alive, I found elements of the plot a bit much. The degree of control that Corporate Financial Consultants exhibits over other companies and governments, local and international, was a tad much to believe. While reading it I kept fluctuating between "Oh, come on!" and "Oh, crap!" And of course since the corporation's reach was a bit unbelievable, it meant the climax to the book had to be a bit unbelievable also. It made sense and followed logically and was consistent with everything that Gonzalez wrote, but it was a little convenient despite being so difficult to achieve. All told, this is a solid book and will be enjoyed. I would recommend though that after reading this book, read Bentley Little's THE ASSOCIATION. That will build upon your fears and freak you out completely!

Reading This in Your Lunch Break? The Corporation Does Not Allow Personal Time! Recommence Your Work Immediately!

This is very different to the other novels I've read by author J.F. Gonzalez. Less horror but actually a lot scarier. I'd actually say this is most well written, where you care the most about his characters compared to his other books. The main character which we follow like a fly on the wall Michelle Dowling lands her dream job to set her up financially in the years to come. The corporation (Corporate Financial Consultants) seem to have been blown away by her resume. So impressed that they've sent her to help with the takeover of a company in El Paso. It's only when the employees in El Paso go out for after work drinks that Michelle starts to notice everything isn't quite right. When a colleague she is supposed to work with the next day who didn't speak positively for the company disappears, Michelle realises something is very, very wrong. Meanwhile across America employees on leave are getting dragged back to work by their colleagues who have shown up on their doorstep who have strict instructions to return them to the office, because they were not at their work cubicle at 8:30am sharp. Other workers are being told they will be granted half an hour later in the day to buy a pillow, swag and whatever else will fit under their desk. It's hard to go into any further depth with this plot than that, since doing so would spoil things for those who haven't read it yet. As you get going you'll immediately start thinking of a famous short story, well maybe more so the movie version of it. I won't mention what that one is but by all means rest assured that The Corporation is not a carbon copy of that and this one's plot is much, much better. My only criticism would be after the main events end p252, it takes way too long to wrap up and actually a little boring pushing through another 25 pages to page 277. A four of five page epilogue would have wrapped this up nicely. I'd still rate the novel five stars overall but the ending should have been edited down.

Once you've finished this you might also want to check out Night Chills by Dean Koontz or Company by Max Barry. Both these are thrillers using elements you come across in this one and would be quite scary if ever adopted by the real corporate world.

interesting book

an interesting book with some good details. It is hurt by no true introduction and conclusion. it doesn't seem the author has a point to write this, it is just words on a page. The repetitive nature of him stating his claims also makes it annoying to read.
that aside i did enjoy reading some new information on something i had no idea "happened". It's not a long book so its worth a read.

WOW!!! THIS. IS. GREAT. I got this in a day early, and before I knew it I was already 20 pages in before needing an eye break. Distraction free for smooth reading because of no chapter & verse numbers. I hope Crossway does the rest of the Bible in this format and in separate volumes. I am enjoying the print size, font and spacing - along with the cream color and THICK pages. FEELS like a Novel in the hands. This is now my favorite Bible format. This is close to how the original audience would have read scripture if they could have afforded a personal copy.

Absolutely Stunning- Thank you Crossway!

This book is the 4 Gospels- Matthew, Mark, Luke and John printed on thick opaque paper and without any cross references, verse/chapter numbers or section headings. It reads like a NOVEL. I find myself getting lost in the storyline of the gospels and reading for large periods of time. The type size is large but not too large, maybe 10 point I would guess. This is similar to the ESV Reader's Bible but of course, it is only the gospels AND it's printed on thicker, opaque paper which makes a HUGE difference. There is absolutely no ghosting and it's easy on my eyes to read for large periods of time. This is how the bible was meant to be read!

In the back there is a listing of each page and what chapter it is... for example page 261 is John chapter 7. So if you wanted to know what chapter you were reading you could easily do that by looking in the back.

This is absolutely beautiful and my new favorite (partial) bible! I am going to write to Crossway, the publisher, and ask if they will release the whole bible in this stunning format- The Gospels, The Epistles, The Prophets, Covenant History, and Poetry in 5 separate volumes. It would be a huge hit!!!!!

I just received this Bible (4 Gospels) and I wish I could give it 10 stars. This is the most beautiful print addition of the Bible I own. Admittedly I'm not a fan of the ESV. However, I must say they do know how to print a beautiful enticing Bible. From the slip cover to the cloth hardback, from the typeset to the page layout and the subtle use of color...inside and out this Bible is amazing. Other publishers take note, this should be the standard of print design that every translation should be measured against.

oh and the cost... truly amazing!

Bought this for a class, but I would recommend it to anyone looking for a complete, clear and well laid out discussion of small business management. This text walks you from beginning concepts to selling the business and everything in between. It is a book you will keep and refer to often. It has meaningful chapter summaries, discussion questions, and practical activities, all designed to give the reader aware the practical knowledge of what they need to know. The text is a bit small, but the information is excellent and worth the price of readers if needed.

This is a solid introductory text in small business management. It is essential reading for anyone thinking of starting a business or investing in someone else's venture. I bought it because it was assigned for a summer course at the Isenberg School at UMass Amherst. I have no complaints. The chapters are long but every page is packed with useful knowledge. The authors make extensive use of real-world examples. Students should keep this book as a desk reference as they begin careers as entrepreneurs or managers.
