A must have is traveling to Kauai

My husband and I went on our honeymoon to Kauai but couldn't rent a car or have enough money to take advantage of all the opportunities Kauai has to offer. A few years later we decided to go back and do everything we had missed on our first trip. This book was the perfect buy for our trip. We used this book in conjunction with, Kauai Trailblazer: Where to Hike, Snorkel, Bike, Paddle, Surf . These books helped us plan our entire trip down to the last detail. We were able to do more things and take advantage of what Kauai had to offer that we may have otherwise not known about without this book. The book gave us detailed directions to destinations they talked about in the book. We were able to visit several beaches it talked about and choose ideal snorkeling locations. It warned us of dangerous terrain and locations depending of the seasons.We were able to go on several hikes and explore hidden gems. I loved reading this book and learning more about Kauai and the culture and what this beautiful island has to offer. This book is a must for anyone traveling to Kauai.

Use with a grain of salt

How useful this guidebook is, depends on the type of traveler you are. I'm the kind that likes to know the highlights, but prefer to discover an area a little more organically. My intention was to avoid the tour-bus type of stuff, but I did want to snorkel, swim, hike & most importantly, eat great food. I found it a bit tedious to go through the book too, although the text is funny in parts.Explain to me again why we don't get a digital/searchable version when we purchase this?
I did find the "beaches" section quite useful & it was good to know what side of the island to visit depending on the time of the year, surf conditions etc. I didn't always agree with their beach ratings though - Tunnels was spectacular, but it's not a "real gem" according to the book. Hideaways was alright, but had too many screaming kids (a "real gem" according to the book), Poipu (a "real gem") was way too crowded & noisy, Secrets (another "real gem") was amazing.
As for hiking, I went on a very rewarding trail that I wouldn't have, if it were not for this book.
The dining section was not for me (the author marvels at the uniqueness of the word "tapas" at one point). If I went by the "ono" ratings, I'd never have found some of the most amazing food I've ever had. I do understand that it's hard to keep up this section.
If you're someone who likes to let the chips fall, I recommend using the book for stuff that needs planning (like a helicopter or sailing tour). Beyond that, I'd land on the island, speak to a few locals (who were very friendly) & let the experience guide itself.

Disappointed

We bought this book for our visit to Kauai just as we had for the other two Ultimate guidebooks that we purchased for the Big Island and Maui in past years. I don't think that it was as beneficial as the other books had been. This edition was nearly two years old and I had to do the research on their website to see which businesses and restaurants had gone our to business. I would say that the app, TripAdvisor was a better source than the book to find the best restaurants and attractions to visit. TripAdvisor was up to date with reviews that were just a day old. To do it over again, I wouldn't buy the book, just do research with TripAdvisor beforehand and get a cheap map. That's all you need.

Will change your life for the better

Rachel provides easy to follow guiding concepts of ways to improve your morning routine. My personal story - I always told myself the night before, "Tomorrow will be the day that I wake up early and accomplish everything I want to accomplish!" Then comes 6am and I tell myself, just 20 minutes more, just 10 minutes more and I snooze myself all the way until I have to rush to get out the door.

I read the reviews and figured, it's 99 cents, I spend more money on things that are useless so why not take a bet on something that can actually improve my life. And I have to say, this book really did change me for the better. I think what's great about it is that there are not strict guidelines which make you feel guilty for not doing something a certain way. Over the past week, I only had one morning where I snoozed the alarm and what was funny was that I actually DREAMT of my morning routine, which just shows me how much my body does want to get up early and accomplish more.

Get this book if you want to build a morning routine - the book is easy to read (you can do it in one sitting) and the writing is personable and conversational. And it's only 99 cents - you probably lose more change in your couch.

Unlike most books in this niche, this one didn't focus a lot on the theoretical and jumped straight into a bunch of actionable stuff. Because of this the method of creating a morning routine can be instantly used right after reading, all you need to do is make a list of the techniques you want to try and start using them. I finished the book one day and used the techniques the next morning, I swear my day was better because of it!

Christmas porn

It really pains me to say this; but, Santa Baby is short on story line and character development. Jennifer Crusie's novella, "Hot Toy" saved this volume from a one star rating; however, even this piece was not quite up to Crusie's usual rollicking good fun standards. If it were stand alone piece, I would probably have given the novella 3 stars.

Lori Foster and Carly Phillips really disappointed me though and dragged the book down irretrievably. Foster's "Christmas Bonus" lacked everything but sex, of which it had way too much. And Phillips' "Naughty Under the Mistletoe" was so unbelievable that even the sex fell flat.

All in all, I was thoroughly disappointed and saddened that Crusie's name is linked to this book. All three authors are much better writers than what was delivered by this book. Save your money and read some of their other works such as, Faking It by Jennifer Crusie.

I really wanted to love this book, but the truth is, it's just OK.

Jennifer Crusie writes an action/spy novella In Hot Toy. Trudy is sent out on Christmas Eve to purchase the latest Hot Toy for her nephew. Of course the toy isn't in stock as everyone wants one. While going through other shelves hoping for a misplaced toy, she runs into a guy she dated 3 times. She thought he was the one. He never called back. The two get mixed up in spy game when they toy she finds contain secret Chinese codes. I thought her's was the best as it was entertaining and the couple's relationship was beleivable. Plus there are quite a few laughs thrown in. If it was just Jennifer Crusie's story I had to rate I would probably give it a 4.

In Lori Fosters Christmas Bonus you have Maggie who has recently taken over her fathers company upon his death. Eric is the employee everyone thought would take over the company. Eric and Maggie both have loved eachother secretly since they met. Eric stumbles upon some evidence of Maggies feelings and decides to act on it. I thought the plot was good, but the story just didn't live up to all it could have been.

In Carly Phillips Naughty Under the Mistletoe you have Toni, a woman who decides she is going to make the moves on her soon to be ex-boss at the Christmas Party. She ends up kissing his twin instead. I am a Carly Phillips fan and this story just fell flat. The couple fall in love after a one night stand. I just couldn't buy it.

These are 3 quick easy reads. Each has entertaining value, but it might be a book you want to check out at the library or borrow from a friend instead of buy.

Enjoyable seasonal anthology....

SANTA, BABY contains one phenomenal new novella by Jennifer Crusie and two reprints from Lori Foster and Carly Phillips. See what happens when Christmas means romance is in the air....

A Major MacGuffin is the "Hot Toy" this Christmas in Jennifer Crusie's phenomenal new novella. Trudy Maxwell is determined to find a Major MacGuffin for her nephew, Leroy, this Christmas Eve after her dad forgets to buy him one. After all, Evil Nemesis Brandon has one, toxic waste packets and all. Trudy is determined that Leroy won't suffer the same heartbreak she and her sister suffered every year when Santa's gifts "fell off the sleigh". Unfortunately, Trudy soon finds herself embroiled in the midst of international espionage and she'll have to decide whether to trust Nolan Mitchell who stole her heart and dumped her several months earlier.

Jennifer Crusie is the master at writing a humorous romance! "Hot Toy" will have the reader laughing out loud nonstop as the antics of the characters are hysterical. The interplay between Trudy and Nolan is funny, but Trudy's conversations with her sister, Courtney, steal the show. The visual images described by Ms. Crusie are so uproariously vivid that one can easily see the carnage of the gingerbread men and the gumdrops sliding off of the roof of the gingerbread house! This reviewer can't remember when she has laughed so hard. Thank you, Ms. Crusie, for a story that puts humor into the entire "Hot Toy" chaos.

Lori Foster's "Christmas Bonus" is about an office romance. Maggie Carmichael inherited her father's business when all she really wanted was her father's right hand man, Eric Bragg. Unfortunately, Eric has been distant ever since Maggie became his boss. Will love blossom as a "Christmas Bonus" this year for Maggie and Eric?

Lori Foster excels at writing a steamy romance. "Christmas Bonus" is definitely a "feel-good" sort of story that is perfect for the holidays. The sexual attraction between Maggie and Eric is never in doubt. Most of the development of their relationship was believable but this reviewer was a bit irritated by comments made by Eric later in the book as it tainted the entire romance. If one eliminates those statements by Eric, then "Christmas Bonus" is an enjoyable holiday tale.

Carly Phillips puts a new twist on an old theme in "Naughty Under the Mistletoe". Toni Larson intends to seduce Stephan Corbin but finds herself with his twin, Maxwell. Will their one night of being "Naughty Under the Mistletoe" bloom into so much more or will their own insecurities get in the way?

Carly Phillips manages to pack a lot of emotional depth into such a short story. Both Toni and Maxwell have their own set of insecurities but each opens up to the other over an unusual game of pool. The blossoming of their romance after such a short period of time is surprisingly believable.

SANTA, BABY stands out as a superb anthology based on the strength of the Jennifer Crusie novella. For "Hot Toy" alone, this reviewer strongly recommends this anthology as I laughed until I cried over this story. Lori Foster and Carly Phillips offer two decent seasonal stories but fans of both should be cautioned that these are both reprints. SANTA, BABY proves to be an enjoyable seasonal anthology that should please fans of Ms. Crusie in particular.

Most cookbooks are either full of pretty pictures with so-so recipes or full of strong recipes but no pictures. This book makes a new niche for itself on the rather crowded indian cuisine shelf by being worthy on both accounts: fantastic quality pictures and a comprehensive cookbook with delightful recipes. It even has calorie and nutrition information for the recipes. The only drawback is that some of the pictures are just there to fatten the book, just ingredients being mixed in a pan which don't add any real value but there is always a picture of the final meal. If you wanted to buy a single book on indian cooking and care about pictures, this would have to be the one.

It really is the "Best Ever" Indian cookbook

We have now tried many of the vegetarian and seafood recipes in the cookbook. They are uniformly quick, easy, and delicious. We haven't found any dish that we have not liked, and are now eating almost exclusively from this cookbook.

One of the best cookbooks you can buy.

I bought this cookbook from Borders for $9.99. I was a bit skeptical of the title but the pictures inside looked appetizing and it contained many dishes I enjoy.

This has been the best cookbook I've ever bought. Why do I say that? Because I've used it more than any other cookbook I've ever owned.

First off, the prologue is an excellent introduction to spices and herbs. The cookbook is expansive enough for almost any dish type be it meat (beef, fish, chicken, etc) or vegetarian (from potato to rice and more).

I've cooked a dozen or more recipes from this book. All have been delicious, many superb. We've had many people over and all have been amazed by the food. Be it a curry, spinach saag, home made cheese or flat breads.

But why is this cookbook so great?
Because it got me cooking!

Some notes regarding this cookbook. I found that many dishes could use to be a tad hotter. It does seem to be toned down to American palates. But it may also depend on your definition of red & green pepper. Different varieties greatly differ in heat.

Second, I found most dishes which called for lemon/lime call for a bit much in regards to American palates. So try seasoning to taste instead of going with what they call. (Mind you this comes from someone who eats fresh limes.)

This book is a classic

Gene Getz is one of the most seminal thinkers on the church today. This book was originally published in 1975 but it is just as useful today as when it was first published (revised and expanded in 1984) - because it is grounded on biblical principles. Terminology has changed over the years but principles based on biblical truth remain the same. Getz argues from the Book of Acts and the Epistles that in order to create a mature body of believers three vital experiences are needed: Vital learning experiences with God's Word (Christians need to be "word-centered" we might say today), Vital relational experiences with God and one another (We might say "community" centered today), and vital witnessing experiences with the non-Christian world (We say "missional" today). Getz points out: "To neglect any one of these facets of New Testament life is to interfere with the God-ordained plan for edification in the local church." This book is a classic on practical ecclesiology. Just the sections in which Getz does an inductive study of the Book of Acts and the Epistles as the foundation for the principles he articulates, makes the book worth having as a teaching tool for elders and church leaders. Getz' book is sorely needed in a day when human opinion and experience as to "what works" has supplanted the Biblical directives as to what the church should be according to the Word of God.
Getz presents a balanced and thorough study of what church is about, the evangelism of the lost (in the world) and the edification of believers (in our gatherings).
He presents principles drawn directly from inductive study, and even presents appendices filled with verse after verse to document his conclusions.
This books serves as a blueprint (since it is anchored to Scripture) for churches bent on pleasing God. If you can dig up a copy of this one, dig it up!

Should have bought this first

After some disastrous "counseling" sessions, some useless books and six months of separation I bought this. I read it and gave it to my husband to read, and finally we started putting things back together. The practical, solution- based tone of this book set it apart from many of the other marital books I've found. I think the logical approach will work better for us than some of the touchy feely stuff we've come across. Being an atheist/nondenominational Christian mixed marriage it was also important to us that the book was fairly neutral in that respect.

Lots of good info

While title leads you to believe this is a book about impending divorce and how to prevent it, it also has great tips for keeping a marriage happy and healthy. After 20 years of marriage, we hit a rough spot. This book reminded us that we have to continue to work at it and lots of great ideas on how. Never take each other for granted or get so comfortable that you feel more like roommates. Our marriage is back on track but I will continue to refer back to this book on a regular basis to remind us not to take each other for granted and how to handle certain issues.

Best Marriage "remedy" Answer, but time for Audio and Digital versions.

Best "cut to the chase" answer book to repair marriage and/or find happiness. However, really, it's time to offer this best seller as audio and digital versions. This is a MUST read, no matter your stage of marriage, because hopefully, we will have a chance to experience all of the stages through the last, "peace and harmony"! Fast, don't wait, get this book if you are looking for answers, and don't/ can't endure the wasted time and money on months of "psychobabble" sessions. Marriage "cycles" are normal as we learn in this book. This book takes you to understanding where you are, and the best answer for your situation-quickly. If you have faith, I also recommend (audio) "Love Must Be Tough: New Hope for Families in Crisis" Dobson, AND "Divorce-Remarriage and The Innocent Spouse: Counseling For Betrayed Believers". These 3 books compliment each other. As the book cover itself would itself would likely cause ridicule, I found a favorite old book with the same cover size (Medieval Europe-a short history), steamed the cover off, and replace Divorce Remedy with the cover that didn't cause spousal alarm.

About the Author
Susan Stempleski is the World Link series editor, teacher trainer, and noted author of several texts on teaching with film and video. She currently teaches at the Hunter College Intensive English Language Institute of the City University of New York and Columbia University Teacher's College, New York City.

James R. Morgan received his MA degree in TESOL from Columbia University Teachers College. He worked as a teacher training fellow in northern Japan and then served as coordinator of the Mombusho English Fellows (MEF) Program for two years. In addition, he taught English at the JAL-BBC Institute and edited in-house materials for Simul Academy in Tokyo. Subsequently, he worked as Senior Development Editor for Cambridge University Press in New York City. Since 1998, he has been a freelance author and editor on a variety of print and video projects for major ELT publishers. He is a co-author of the World Link and World Pass series for National Geographic Learning.

Nancy Douglas has been in the English language teaching field since 1991. She has worked as an instructor and materials developer in Korea and the United States. She has co-authored several series for National Geographic Learning, including World Link and Reading Explorer, and has edited print and Web-based materials for students as well as professional development courses for teachers.
