About the Author
Rachel Abbott was born and raised in Manchester, England, and trained as a systems analyst before launching her own interactive media company in the early 1980s. Not for me...

There are a few problems with THE BACK ROAD. So many that it reminds me of one of those terrible movies shown on Lifetime.

My main problem of this "mystery" is that it reads far too much like a soap opera. There are too many characters and too many red herring plot points. Perhaps the main problem is the editing. This book is just far too long. Without all of the character introspection and descriptions of the way Leo's jeans hugged her slender body, this may have made for a decent story. But I found quite a bit of it boring.

Solid story telling but with a cast of many, some unsympathetic, characters.

After a shocking prologue and first few chapters that promise a cutting edge story, The Back Road hurtles itself into a large group of well-to-do friends with "first world problems" getting together for a dinner party. The main characters, half-sisters Ellie and Leo, grew up together in what can best be described as an Evil Stepmother environment with Ellie getting all the attention, and all the inheritance. Leo consequently left her toxic childhood behind and established herself as a Life Coach with an Internet blog. Ellie stayed behind in their childhood home, married her sweetheart, Max, had twins, and occupies her days lavishly spending using her inheritance. Both sisters, while living very different lives and lifestyles, have remained close.

Leo has hesitantly returned to their childhood home, Willow Farm, for Ellie's post-remodel housewarming party. Ellie's friends, wealthy couples with way too much money and too little interest in their own marriages, are not a likeable lot. Fiona doesn't like sex and Charles is away in London too often. Pat left his wife for Mimi, the barmaid, and no one likes Mimi. Gary is a total ass with a new Porsche who shows up at the party, his wife, Penny, in tears. Sean, the contractor who did the remodel, left his drunk of a wife at home. And Tom, a retired detective and new neighbor, seems to be the only normal attendee at the party.

The main topic at the dinner party is the recent hit and run accident of a school-age girl, Abby. Left for dead on what is called the "back road", Abby is now unconscious, on a ventilator, and unable to talk. But, as almost every person at the table was driving the back road that night, and reminiscent of an Agatha Christie novel, the reader knows that someone at the party is the culprit.

There are more side plots to this story, of course: Max has become increasingly secretive, so Ellie thinks he is sleeping with the high school PE teacher. Fiona, looking for a sex partner, is hitting up on an unnamed person at the party. Mimi steals Ellie's phone and texts an unnamed someone, then she drops a bombshell at the party. Gary is in the process of making a business deal with Sean, who has a mysterious backer. Pat disappears and won't answer his phone. And, someone is stalking the not so innocent Ellie. The biggest mystery? Why doesn't Ellie, after everything they went through together in their childhood, trust her sister enough to share her fears with her?

The story meanders as Leo, Ellie, and Tom individually try to solve the mystery of who ran over Abby. Ellie's stalker ramps up the tension, but the reader will quickly figure out the stalker's identity. Ellie grows more and more paranoid about Max's supposed extramarital affair, but the reader will not have much sympathy as it becomes apparent that she and her stalker have a history. When Leo makes interesting discoveries about the dinner guests and someone other than the original stalker begins to blackmail Ellie, the story starts to pick up.

The last part of the book is loaded with action and answers, neatly tying together all the threads of the story. The whodunit is not surprising. But the answer to the mysterious prologue, while the clues are there, is surprising. All misunderstandings are cleared up and at the end there is a possible opportunity to continue one of the storylines in another book. The Back Road, while not a pulse-pounding, mind-blowing mystery by any means, is still a good solid mystery novel. However, I really did not care about a major percentage of the rather large cast of characters. While the retired police detective, Tom, had a very minor role in this story, so minor that I actually suspected him for awhile, I was surprised to discover he was in the author's last novel. Leo was the most intelligent and compelling, and while I sometimes did want to give Ellie a good shake for being "such a silly cow", her pain and fears were palpable.

So, I give this book 3 stars because of the unsympathetic characters, but 3.5 stars for solid story telling.

After reading Only the Innocent I was excited to start The Back Road. Not only was it morbid, but the sentences were short, stiff and it felt like it was a different writer than Rachel Abbott. The first book flowed and this book was almost like See Spot Run. Run Spot.

About the Author
Kenneth Frampton is an internationally respected architectural critic who holds the Ware Professorship at the Graduate School of Architecture and Planning, Columbia University, New York. He lectures extensively in the US and Europe, and has also written, edited and contributed to numerous publications on contemporary architecture. He is the author of Modern Architecture: A Critical History (1980; revised 1985 and 1992) and Studies in Tectonic Culture (1997). His collected essays Labour, Work and Architecture are published by Phaidon.

Very Good Overview

If you want to get a fine overview of Siza's works, this book might be just fine. It inculdes a short presentation of all of his works, the major buildings are featured more extensively. There are plenty of Siza's beautiful sketches and abstract line drawings might clarify his projects sufficiently (how could the editor oversee that the faculty of Porto is mirrored?). It is remarkable that most of the photos do not present the the projects in the just finished state, but how they look like right now, making plain how gracefully Siza's buildings get older. I have to agree that Le Croquis might show his major buildings more in depth and documents far more Siza's own point of view with two long interviews, however this edition is for sure worth the money.

The Most Comprehensive Monograph of Alvaro Siza Pubshed

Fernando Tavora called Alvaro Siza "a genuine builder of works of gravity". This impressive (620 pages) monumental volume by well respected architectural scholar -Kenneth Frampton- contains all of Siza's work from 1952-1999 with beautiful photographs,drawings, and sketches to complement author's in-depth writing. This is by far the best monograph of Alvaro Siza, and a must have if one wants to thoroughly understand his work.

A good book of the architect of the moment!

Some people say Siza is the architect of the white! Probably, if whe can understand that the white colour of his facades is the consequence of his absolutly control of plans and forms. He is a genius! This book is a good way to show almost all works of Siza. For me there is only one book that is better than this one: "Alvaro Siza - the book, from ElCroquis".But anyway, buy this book if you want to understand the genius of Alvaro Siza.

Not your parents' money management book

First, here's what this book is not: It's not your parents' money management and investing book, although as a parent I wish I had done in my twenties what Ramit Sethi tells the twenty-somethings they should be doing right now.

Ramit starts with the premise that most people are so overwhelmed by the sheer amount of financial information available that they just shut down and do nothing. So Ramit tells you exactly what to do with your money and why. Want to know whether it's smarter to pay extra on your student loans or put that money into your 401(k) instead? Ramit will tell you. Want to know some specific financial companies that offer the low-cost index funds you should invest in through your Roth IRA? Ramit will tell you. Do you not even know what the heck an index fund is? Ramit will tell you!

Ramit also tells the truth about brown bagging your lunch and curbing your latte habit; and the truth is that these actions on their own are virtually pointless. Instead, you should go after the big wins, like getting the lowest interest rate and the best price on your next car because you have impeccable credit and negotiated "like an Indian" (negotiation scripts included).

Ramit maps out exactly how to get from where you are now to where you want to be financially, including how to create a personal money management system that practically manages itself. Ramit's system starts with a no-fee checking account and an online high-interest savings account. (He even tells you which online bank he uses.) He then walks you through setting up automatic bill payments and regularly scheduled transfers to your investment accounts. Throughout, he includes easy-to-understand charts, as well as short pieces by other personal finance bloggers.

I wish I could quote some of the passages that I found especially useful or entertaining--Ramit writes with an appealing, if oddball, humor--but I have already mailed my copy of the book to my 24-year-old son, who called me last night to tell me it never would've occurred to him to ask his bank to waive an overdraft fee. (That gem is in chapter 2, I think.)

I Will Teach You To Save Money should be the title of this book and Ramit's Blog

I Will Teach You To Save Money, though a far less titillating title would be the more appropriate name for this book. 20 and 30 somethings are the intended audience for this book. And for them the book is delightfully irreverent and saucy in its language. You will not get rich by using the concepts in this book however you will gain basic financial literacy, which is the first step on the path to creating wealth. There are no new financial revelations in this book. If you already have a personal finance library you can pass on this book. If you don't already have one and are looking for a place to start, this book is a great way to go. I Will Teach You To Be Rich is not for people who have created a measure of wealth and are looking to increase it. For that you will have to look elsewhere.

This is my new #1 recommendation for anyone seeking personal finance advice.

This is definitely the best personal finance book I've read so far. It's a logical, step-by-step, practical handbook for financial success, specially written for people in their 20's. Sethi gives advice on “automatically enabling yourself to save, invest, and spend - enjoying it, not feeling guilty...because you’re spending only what you have.” His main point: automate your finances so you effortlessly save and invest, leaving you money to spend on things you love without feeling guilty. Automatic saving and investing helps overcome psychological barriers and laziness.

In addition to his emphasis on automation, I agreed with Sethi’s recommendation for long-term, passive, buy-and-hold investing instead of speculative, market-timing investing. I also liked Sethi’s 85 Percent Solution, which states that it's better to act and get it 85% right than to do 0%; sometimes good enough is good enough, and it’s always better than doing nothing.

Another good message is "spend extravagantly on the things you love, and cut costs mercilessly on the things you don't." That's valuable because everyone defines being "rich" differently, and it's not all about money. Money is just the tool we use to acquire the material possessions and experiences we want. That's the difference between being cheap and being frugal; being cheap is trying to cut spending on everything, and being frugal is cutting costs on the things you don't care about so that you can splurge on the things you do.

I liked the concept of making a Conscious Spending Plan instead of a budget. Almost no one actually makes a budget, and even fewer follow it. Instead, consciously decide how you'll spend your money. I especially like this idea of guilt-free spending, because too often the recommendation is to limit all spending. But people in their 20s want to live it up, not sit at home and pinch every penny! The Conscious Spending Plan lets you spend a certain percentage of your money on whatever you want, without feeling guilty, since you’re paying yourself and your bills first.

The book is written in the form of a 6-week action plan. Each chapter describes the tasks and reasoning behind them, and ends with a checklist of steps to take. Here are the weeks:

Week 1: Credit Cards. Check your credit, pick a good credit card, set up automatic payments, pay off debt.
Week 2: Bank Accounts. Open or assess your checking account, open and fund a high-interest savings account.
Week 3: Investing Accounts. Open a 401(k), make a plan to pay off debt, open a Roth IRA and set up automatic payment.
Week 4: Conscious Spending. Create a Conscious Spending Plan, track spending, and cut in the right places.
Week 5: Automatic Money Flows. List and link accounts, then set up an Automatic Money Flow to automatically fund the 4 categories of your Conscious Spending Plan.
Week 6: Investing Choices. Figure out your investing style, research investments, and buy funds.

The book gives a fairly in-depth explanation of the concepts and fundamentals of personal finance, but also contains plenty of examples of actual bank accounts and funds. There are many references to the 2008 recession and other events, so those parts of the book didn't age well.

Buying a house
Houses are a poor investment compared to stocks; they’ve historically returned 0% after inflation. Before buying a house, determine the total monthly payment including mortgage, taxes, insurance, and maintenance. It should be less than 30% of your gross monthly income.
The total house price should be less than 3 times your annual gross income.
Buy a house only if you can live in it for 10 years. Make a 20% down payment and get a 30 year fixed rate mortgage.

To be fair, I probably should have listened to this one, but I did many of the other things Sethi points out.

Additional notes
Use savings for goals less than 5 years away.
Set your accounts for automatic deferrals, transfers, and payments to automatically direct money into retirement accounts, savings, bills, and a spending allowance.
Negotiate a higher total compensation (salary plus benefits) by researching compensation for comparable jobs and proving the value you bring to the company.

One thing I did was that I continuously talked to my friends about the book and we sat down together and completed a lot of the actions in sequence. By having those around me also aligned it made easier for me not to be tempted to go out. For example, we decided only to go out to eat for lunch once a week to stick to our plan.

Harvey Lodish is Professor of Biology and Professor of Bioengineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a member of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. Dr. Lodish is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was President (2004) of the American Society for Cell Biology. He is well known for his work on cell membrane physiology, particularly the biosynthesis of many cell-surface proteins, and on the cloning and functional analysis of several cell-surface receptor proteins, such as the erythropoietin and TGF-� receptors. His lab also studies hematopoietic stem cells and has identified novel proteins that support their proliferation. Dr. Lodish teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in cell biology and biotechnology.�Arnold Berk is Professor of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics and a member of the Molecular Biology Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Berk is also a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is one of the original discoverers of RNA splicing and of mechanisms for gene control in viruses. His laboratory studies the molecular interactions that regulate transcription nitiation in mammalian cells, focusing particular attention on transcription factors encoded by oncogenes and tumor suppressors. He teaches introductory courses in molecular biology and virology and an advanced course in cell biology of the nucleus.�Chris A. Kaiser is Professor and Head of the Department of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Good detailing

This text goes into the right amount of detail necessary for a college course. The diagrams are well labeled and easy to understand, most of the time even without reading the accompanying literature that is within the text. The questions at the end of the chapter focus on major parts of each one. Also, each chapter has small sections dedicated to medical examples when relevant, which is a plus for premedical students.

The book is amazing, it provides detailed descriptions of concepts without losing the reader. The figures and descriptions next to the figures and their use in the text help the reader to remember by seeing the visual and then reading 2 times, once in the text and a shorter description next to the figure. The set up of the chapters is nice with well written overviews and a layout of where the writer is trying to take the reader. The medical relevance sections are intriguing and tie the concept very well into a real world example. The online animations, videos, and podcasts are nice. More offerings would be nice and possibly more detail in the videos would be helpful since the viewer can pause and rewind to see the video again.

This textbook is packed with details, but I disagree with those that feel that this is a bad thing. I felt that this book was an excellent supplement to what I learned in class. Besides, it's molecular biology. The details are important and can't just be cut out of the book...
