Dr. H. Gilbert Welch is an academic physician, a professor at Dartmouth Medical School, and a nationally recognized expert on the effects of medical testing. Glad I didnt't read this book before my mother's back surgery

I wish I wouldn't have read this book. I say that not because the book was bad, but because it was too good. Some of the chapters just hit a little too close to home. One chapter in particular filled me with fear and another filled me with sorrow.

I started reading the book when my 80 year-old mother went in for major back surgery. I breezed through the first four chapters during her five hours of surgery and two hours in post-op care. The chapters were educational and enlightening. Dr. Welch makes a very compelling case about how we are being over-diagnosed and over-treated. The tone of the book was witty, so I was chucking and nodding my head as I read about data overload, U-shaped curves, the general uselessness of screening, the harm that false alarms can cause, the analogy of types of cancers to barn-yard animals: cancer that will never cause a problem are turtles, cancers that can be fought are rabbits, and cancers you can do nothing about are birds.

Then I got to Chapter 5 and the assumption: Action Is Always Better Than Inaction. First Dr. Welch gave some statistics on hospital infections after surgery: 1.7 Million "health care associated infections" associated with 98,987 deaths in 2002. Whoa doggie, my mom was in surgery. Next he talked about "postoperative cognitive dysfunction" after surgery particularly in the elderly. (Getting scare now - does 80 count as elderly?) Then he talked about needless surgery due to back pain, and how the majority of the time it doesn't work. I wanted to cry at this point, was mom doing this all for nothing? But I felt better when I read the statement: "Back surgery should only be done on patients who don't have back pain". My mom's surgery was to relieve nerve compression caused by severe scoliosis. But then the section on "invasive surgery" had me worried again: her cut was 15 inches long. And the section "Inaction = Allowing the Body to Heal" had me second guessing the decision to have the surgery. Talk about a roller coaster of emotions. I had to stop reading at this point.

I started reading again a few weeks later only to begin Chapter 7 and the assumption: It's all About Avoiding Death. The central theme of the chapter is that sometimes the quality of life is more important than prolonging life by a few months. Particularly with painful, debilitating cancer treatments. This chapter had me sobbing with tears pouring from my eyes. It brought back so many sad memories that are still raw and close to the surface. Three years ago my little brother was diagnosed with colon cancer that had moved to his liver. He fought the "cancer" battle for two years (MD Anderson). He went through all the pain and suffering because he wanted to see his son graduate from high school, he wanted to see his daughter go to her first dance, he wanted to go to the beach one last time. During one treatment (they inserted a tube through his groin and were pumping chemo drugs directly into his liver) he went into cardiac arrest. The doctors brought him back, but later he told me he wished they would have let him die. He said the treatments were too much for his wife, his kids, his family, and him; that sometime the quality of life is more important than quantity. He said it is better to quickly die with dignity than to wither away in excruciating pain. All my brothers' words were being echoed back to me by Dr. Welch.

I'm crying again. Excellent book but like I said I wish I had not read it.

Pretty much covers the same ground that the author's previous two books covered

This is the third book in a series of books either authored or co-authored by Welch making the argument that we suffer potentially serious consequences from overdiagnosis and overtreatment. I've now read all three of them. The central points Welch makes in all of them are important ones, for both our personal health and the country's fiscal health: overtreatment is rife, dangerous, and hard to avoid. Welch makes the points persuasively, using the right blend of anecdote and (quasi-) technical explanation. (Think VERY hard before you have that prostate exam, that mammogram, that back surgery, and before you sign on to take statins for slightly elevated cholesterol.) But I don't think that it takes three books to make the argument; there is a lot of repetition and overlap. I would certainly recommend reading ONE of the books, and have in fact made that recommendation to friends, students and colleagues. But I can't recommend buying or reading all three: In my opinion, there simply isn't enough material to justify writing three books on the topic all directed at a popular/non-specialist audience. This third book is the most personal of the three books. But middle book, the co-authored OVERDIAGNOSIS, is the best.

We do not have "health care." We have health service without care, and without freedom to know and do what is good and right. Every law is directed to increasing industry profit, not patient benefit.

About the Author

Rebecca J. Lukens graduated with honors from Concordia College in Minnesota, earned an M.A. from Syracuse University, and next worked on the editorial staff of a children's encyclopedia in New York.� After a year on the faculty of St. Olaf College followed by her marriage, she taught at New York State College, Albany, and later at Ohio University, Chillicothe. After publication of a few children's stories, Miami University Department of English hired Lukens to teach Children's Literature–not "Kiddy Lit"–as well as technical and expository writing.

�

The first edition of A Critical Handbook of Children's Literature was published by Scott Foresman in 1976, and A Critical Handbook of Literature for Young Adults by Harper Collins in 1994.� Lukens also co-edited a literature anthology,�Woman: An Affirmation,�published by D. C. Heath in 1979.� Her latest publication, It's Been Great, is a memoir dedicated "to my children and theirs."

Lukens's retirement teaching has been with Miami University's Institute for Learning in Retirement; her favorite class she called "Laughter for Health and Sanity."

�

Jacquelin J. Smith is a career educator whose experience spans grades 2—8 through pre-service teaching. Children’s Literature has been a passion throughout her career, from literacy learning to connections across the curriculum. She has shared many cross-curricular teaching and learning strategies for science, social studies and math with children’s books at numerous professional conferences and in publications with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. A lifelong learner and Children’s Literature instructor at the University of Northern Iowa, her studies continually confirm both her appreciation for and belief in the power of critically examining children’s literature.

Cynthia Miller Coffel is the author of Thinking Themselves Free: Research on the Literacy of Teen Mothers. Her research in children's and young adult literature has appeared in journals such as The ALAN Review, Reader, and QSE. Her work won the Jeffrey E. Smith award for nonfiction from The Missouri Review in 2007, and her literary essays have twice been listed among the notable essays of the year in The Best American Essays series. Her PhD in literacy education is from the University of Iowa.

A Critical Handbook of Children's Literature is a fantastic resource book for teachers. It really explains all the parts of literature- plot, theme, character analysis, etc to help teach literature to students. It is also a great book for anyone studying children's literature. I highly recommend this resource book!

Great textbook

The end all of children's lit apparently. Great for use as a textbook (which is the reason I bought it), but sometimes I got frustrated with how overly simple the book was. Fantastic resource though and definitely a keeper even after the class ended for the semester.

Great condition-ok book content.

As this is a college textbook it provides a simplified level of the information.The subject matter seems to be "dumbed down". I have gotten more in-depth information and knowledge about chemistry from books written from the aspect that the author is writing to a reader that is interested in the subject and not merely a short synopsis of information from various topics within the field of chemistry. I am taking a beginning college level chemistry course this quarter, so this is the chosen textbook by the faculty. The book itself was in great condition, exactly as stated by the seller and I received it promptly.

I haven't been able to view it. I downloaded it to my PC, and whenever I try to open it it says its not compatible with windows 8. I also tried to use my kindle but it keeps saying incompatible. Worst $112 I've ever spent! Do NOT buy it!

It will teach you a concept that relies on another concept or set of skills/measurements it has not yet taught you. Terribly out of order. I did best on tests when I only relied on reading my teacher's slideshows/notes and ignoring the book, because it is frequently wrong.

Vol. II of II. Fills a gap in the history of the Kreigsmarine. Photos are well chosen and reproduced, explanations more than adequate. Variety of introductory sub chapters on methodology, primary and secondary sources, reference points etc. In short a detailed approach to the photos and interpretation thereof. The two volumes well worth the price.

I highly recommend this excellent work and its companion volume

The second volume in what is considered by many to be the most comprehensive work on German camouflage in WW II, this book details everything from battleship Tirpitz to the various cruisers and destroyers that once sailed the seas. I highly recommend this excellent work and its companion volume, mostly because of the amazing detail of each camouflage detailed for each ship. The authors even show you where they are not sure of a particular scheme. This book and the other volume belong in any collection of work on the Kriegsmarine.

NOT YOUR USUAL LEGAL THRILLER

When I learned that my law school classmate, Ronald Balson, had written a
legal novel entitled, Once We Were Brothers, I knew that I just had to read it. If I
expected to read something along the lines of a Turrow, Grisham or Martini, legal
thriller, I was pleasantly surprised - it wasn't.

The story begins when Ben Solomon, an 83 year old retired city worker,
appears at the opening night gala of Chicago's Lyric Opera and puts a gun to the
head of Elliot Rosenzweig, an insurance magnate and one of Chicago's most
prominent citizens and philanthropists. We learn that the gun was unloaded and
Ben says that his motive was that he wanted to exposed Elliot as being an
impostor - that Elliot really was Otto Piatek, a former SS officer known in Poland
as the "Butcher of Zamosc". It was at this time that Elliot Rosenzweig declared
for the first time that he was himself a Holocaust survivor and definitely not an
SS officer. He then revealed his arm which bore a concentration camp tattoo.
Who would represent Ben? This crime was committed in front of hundreds of
people and Rosenzweig had been declared by the Mayor Chicago to be "Chicago's
treasure."

Attorney Catherine Lockhart, who was working for one of Chicago's major
white collar firms, made the "mistake" that many attorneys do, by answering her
telephone. She was asked if she could do a favor for a friend - words an attorney
hates to hear. What was supposed to be only an hour or two of listening to the tale
of this "delusional" old man, turned into many hours of interviews with Ben, who
tells his tale with astounding and poignant clarity and no matter how hard
Catherine pushes him to "get to the point", he has a tale to tell, and he will tell it
in his own way and in his own time. Even after the original charges were
dropped, because Elliot refused to prosecute a delusional old man, Ben insisted
that he be allowed to persist in HIS charges, and Catherine agrees.
The story shifts, back and forth from Chicago, 2004, to Poland from 1936-
1944, with vivid (and in the case of Chicago - geographically accurate) images
from both eras. As we hear Ben's story - how his family took in a young German
boy and raised him as their own, only for him to leave their house when grown
and return as an SS Officer, known as the "Butcher of Zamosc", we see how the
Jewish community in Poland dealt with the ever growing Nazi threat. Ben tells the
story of his family and his love for Hannah, his wife. It is a story of hope and
despair; of heroism and cowardice; of loyalty and treachery. All of these traits
were found in Poland AND in Chicago. Unlike many Holocaust stories, this story
does not take place in the Camps - it deals with Ben's family and community and
how they dealt (or in some cases - didn't) with the threat to their very being.
Meanwhile, in the scenes taking place in Chicago, we find Catherine
becoming more and more involved with Ben. She does so at the threat of losing
her job with her firm and, at times, in danger of losing more. No matter how clear
Ben is in his description of the atrocities caused at the hands of Otto (Elliot), there
is one continuous problem - he has no proof.

Elliot is now represented by one of the larger law firms in Chicago and they
are attempting to drown Catherine in paper. The Judge appears to have a certain
"sympathy" for Elliot. Elliot is the darling of the media. This is definitely a David
v. Goliath venture. However, a theme developed between Ben and Catherine and
which was the motto of the Polish Freedom Fighters (and the motto of most
criminal defense attorneys) - "Nigdy sie nie Poddamy" Never Surrender."
The novel ends with an exciting and somewhat unexpected finish and don't
be surprised if you find a tear or two running down your cheeks.

If a lawyer spends a great number of years representing indigent clients,
often fighting the system, he or she often becomes more than a little jaded and
their "legal battery" becomes more than a little in need of a recharge. Charles
Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities" opens with the immortal line, "It was the best of
times; it was the worst of times." In "Once We We Brothers", Balson writes of the
best in humanity and the worst in humanity; the best in the law and the worst in
the law; and the best in lawyers and the worst in lawyers. If you find your "legal
battery" is in need of a recharge, or your moral compass needs a reset, this novel
is just what you need.

Very good. Entertaining and informative

I bought this on a friend's recommendation and didn't really know what to expect. Historical fiction based in Nazi-occupied Poland, bouncing back and forth to present day America. I ended up loving this book. It is part legal thriller, part action/love story, and part history book. The descriptions of Europe and what was happening from a human perspective in the 1940's were so vivid that I actually feel more informed and knowledgeable after having read it. You can tell that the author really did his research. Enjoyable and informative - I can't ask for much more than that. It's a cliche to say that you "just couldn't put the book down." But last night, I had intended to go to bed at around 10 PM. When did I actually get to bed? 2 AM, after I finished this book.

At heart, it's a love story.

Ron Balson's first novel, Once We Were Brothers, combines the best of historical fact, spellbinding fiction and personal drama. Although set in war-torn Europe and the legal world of modern Chicago, it's not your typical courtroom drama with historical flashbacks; it's also a love story that crosses both time and geographical boundaries. As an attorney in Chicago who also has spent time in southern Poland, I know firsthand that this book is accurate in its portrayal of both worlds. Add well-developed fictional characters, suspense and a great ending, and you won't be able to put this book down.Once We Were Brothers

Great Guide for Beginners and Pro's

This book covers from all the different box desgins that have been made and how you can create any type of box for you're home. Having it sound as good or better than a speaker box you would buy at an Audiophile store for $2,000 to $6,000 for a fraction of the price. It also gives you multiple web pages to explore about crossover calculators, box calculators and just other websites of other peoples creations and they show you how they built what they did. Partsexpress is one of the websites I did a lot of my purchasing through, they are fast and have a great selection of speaker's and components. They also have a do it yourself page with multiple projects from various people that have submitted their ideas and box designs. All of which you can create the exact same box as they did do to the fact that they give you all the blue prints, crossover design's and other good information. This book will help you understand so many speaker building techniques and the way's it all comes together in the end.

I reccomend this book to all that have a desire in building their own home theater system and reccomend you read many more books on the subject. The more you know the better you will be and the better it will all sound.

Seems to be a good book

I haven't made it through the whole book but it seems to have lots of useful equations and a little bit of theory for building speakers. I am just getting into speaker building so I don't have a lot of knowledge of what is good and what is useless info. I haven't built any speakers yet so I don't know if this particular info is good for making top notch speakers.

The book was a waste of money. It had very little useful information, and the information it did contain was so rudimentary that anyone who has a desire to build a really good speaker system would be better advised to purchase a more informative and better written alternative. The examples were few, and the aim of the book seemed to be chiefly concerned with buiding speaker systems for automobiles, something I have no interest in doing.
