Basic overview with lots of interesting detail

For anyone interested in learning the basic facts about the Vikings, this little book is an excellent place to begin. Brondsted covers enough to give you a sense of the Vikings and their time. He also provides enough detail to spark interest in reading further.

A very intelectual book

This book was the perfect book for any school asignment. It gave very specific facts and dates. It only lacked in the fact that it was kind of boring. It gets more interesting as you go along though. Overall, it was a very good book.

great alternative learning style

Okay so the pictures of the guy in white sneakers are super dumb- but the book IS very helpful for a beginner; It comes with small stickers to place underneath the strings to practice fingering per different color stickers numbered 1-5 indicating 1st, second, third... fingering- you get the idea; I wrote on the stickers the letter of each note so I wouldn't have to remember which colors indicated which notes; and the stickers come off clean with no residue; this is just an added bonus- b/c I initially bought this book over others- b/c it shows pictures of a players' hand with fingers on the correct frets along with the actual chart; Personally, it is much easier for me to look at a picture of someone playing the note rather than a chart with dots.And as I said the stickers make it a breeze- I don't have to look down every time I want to play a note to see if my fingers are in the right place. Also the book comes with a pic and a full length poster labeled "notes and scales" to refer to for all of the notes.I haven't really read through the book- I'm a scimmer anyway- and the first chapter is all about positioning and tuning- which I already know; But if you are a visual learner- and have had trouble in the past- get this book to start with; It's definitely learn at your own pace- and doesn't remind me of a boring text book- other authors should be as innovative;
and yes it seems he numbers the strings backwards -but to each his own I guess- and with the stickers and pictures for reference, this has not confused me.
I have been trying to learn guitar for forever- but the sheer boredom of most teaching styles has turned me off- this is straight to the point- no "hot cross buns"- and perfect for an ADD brain like mine to scim and take what information I need to build a foundation and learn my own way.

I'd like to give a 4.5...

This book takes an agressive approach to learning, with each "week" adding a lot of new concepts. I know a little bit about music, but I'm new to the guitar. For me, I like it a lot. People who don't play another instrument might find it more intimidating, I'm not sure. But then, no one is forcing you to finish a week's lessons in an actual week.

What's good: it starts you off right away playing decent music. It begins with chords and some useful theory. You're moving down the neck right away. Playing along with the CD is fun, and it forces you to keep up with the tempo.

If the book had been proofread better, I'd give it 5 stars. For example, there are places where the text has both a fret number and standard musical notation, and the fret number is wrong. The book refers you to play along with the instructional CD backing tracks, but it doesn't tell you which track number to play. It's easy enough to figure out what was meant, but a little more care would have been better.

The wall chart is nice. I haven't used the color-coded stickies on my guitar (I think they're a little silly), but maybe some people would find them useful.

Despite my little gripes, I really like the organization of the book, and it's a nice package with the CD and chart.

About the Author
Laura joined the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in 2005 at the age of 21. She began her career in the kitchen as a dishwasher, but after just a month, Laura was thrown into the deep end and promoted to chief cook (affectionately called galley slave) out of necessity. She fell in love with vegan cooking and rose to the challenge of preparing three meals a day for 50 crew members. When she's not sailing the high seas, Laura lives in Australia and is the head chef at a non-for-profit, pay-as-you-feel vegan restaurant in Newtown, New South Wales.

I'm a vegan that hates to cook, but...

I am in no way, shape, or form good at cooking but this book explains everything so well I actually enjoy cooking with these recipes! Have shared some with family members who thoroughly enjoyed the food. It's also amazing to hear what goes on during these campaigns and how important life in the galley really is. Thank you Laura and everybody in the organization for doing what you do.

A cook book that you'll really love to use!

Although not a vegan, I was intrigued by this cook book which has the whole fascinating Sea Shepherd story, so well written and interesting, plus the great bonus of really delicious recipes that are easy to make in my own kitchen!! Laura is obviously an amazing woman. Try her Fish-Free Cakes and Chocolate-Banana Fudge Cake. Really good! Well worth the $24.95 price!

A VEGAN MUST-HAVE!

I originally ordered this book because I'm a vegan cookbook hoarder and I stumbled across this and I thought it was cool that the Sea Shepherds had a vegan cookbook. It's now one of my go-to books! All of the recipes are made with standard ingredients (no trips to the health food store needed) and they are super easy to make. The recipes are of the comfort food/staples variety, for things like pancakes, carrot cake, bean soup, even stuffed veggie dumplings. For the most part these are veganized versions of things you would normally eat on an omnivore diet, which is just fine with me.

I've made many recipes out of Cookin' Up A Storm and have not had one flub yet, even the breads, which I normally have a hard time making.

The photographs and stories in here are super awesome! I think this is one of the few cookbooks that I actually sat down and read through. It's really interesting to read about these eco-activists and what life is like on the ships.

Honestly, even if you aren't a fan of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and what they do, I still would recommend buying this cookbook. I've yet to find a vegan cookbook that comes close to this one and I own and use several.

A beneficial book for any teacher!

The activities help to sharpen basic and necessary skills, such as reading, writing, and thinking. No English-to-Arabic Glossary

This book is alright, although there are typos throughout (missing dots on some letters, missing diacritical marks/too many diacritical marks on others, which makes it hard to read and understand when you're just starting out), including entire exercises in the back with errors/incorrect responses (which makes it difficult to impossible to check your work).

The biggest problem I have with this book, though, is that there is no English-into-Arabic section in the glossary (arranged in alphabetical order by first letter of the English word), only an Arabic-to-English glossary (arranged in what appears to be Arabic-alphabetical order). This means that in order to find a word, you have to pore through (potentially) the letter workbook AND all lessons in the textbook you've taken so far, in order to find a word you remember taking, but can't remember the word itself, which is horrible. Good language texts need both glossaries in order to be useful to students (don't know a word you're looking at in Arabic? check the Arabic-to-English glossary. Don't know how to say a word in Arabic? look it up in the English-to-Arabic glossary).

No information on how to break into the modeling business

If you are suffering from low self-esteem and confidence, this is the book for you. If you want to learn how to break into the modeling business, do not buy this book. It is only 63 pages long and did not give me any information on helping my daughter break into the modeling business. The title is correct "How to BE a model" - restate this as 'how to have a stable personality while being the center of attention'. It is not about how to manage a modeling career.

Confidence is king (or queen)

When you think about a model, chances are you think about a willowy thin woman who is taller than most men are. That does not have to be the case though. This book is a how to guide on getting into the modeling world without matching the stereotypes that society tends to portray. Broken into two parts, this author takes you through mentally and physically preparing yourself for the rigors of the modeling lifestyle. The author assures you that models can be of all shapes and sizes and the biggest attribute that you can bring to the table is an attitude of confidence. Even if you have no aspirations to be a model the lessons on personal confidence alone makes this book worth the purchase.

I like this book. I have a few friends who are models and most of what they told me on how to become a model is in this book. I think this book is spot on about becoming a model. It does not only say stuff about agencies, but it actually teaches you on how to be a model; like gaining confidence, how to feel six feet tall and exude beauty.
