About the Author
William A. Haviland is professor emeritus at the University of Vermont, where he founded the Department of Anthropology and taught for 32 years. He holds a PhD in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania and has conducted research in archaeology in Guatemala and Vermont; ethnography in Maine and Vermont; and physical anthropology in Guatemala. This work has been the basis of many publications in national and international books and journals, as well as in trade publications. His books include The Original Vermonters, co-authored with Marjorie Power, and a technical monograph on ancient Maya settlement. He served as consultant for the award-winning telecourse Faces of Culture, and he is co-editor of the series Tikal Reports, published by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Dr. Haviland has lectured to many professional and non-professional audiences in Canada, Mexico, Lesotho, South Africa, and Spain, as well as in the United States. A staunch supporter of indigenous rights, he served as expert witness for the Missisquoi Abenaki of Vermont in a case over aboriginal fishing rights. Dr. Haviland received the University Scholar award by the Graduate School of the University of Vermont in 1990; a Certificate of Appreciation from the Sovereign Republic of the Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi, St. Francis/Sokoki Band in 1996; and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Center for Research on Vermont in 2006. Now retired from teaching, he continues his research, writing, and lecturing from the coast of Maine and serves as a trustee for the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, focused on Maine's Native American history, culture, art, and archaeology. His most recent books are At the Place of the Lobsters and Crabs (2009) and Canoe Indians of Down East Maine (2012).

Harald E.L. Prins is a University Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at Kansas State University (KSU). Academically trained at half a dozen Dutch and U.S. universities, he came to the U.S. as a List Fellow at the New School for Social Research in New York City. He has taught at Radboud University (Netherlands), as well as Bowdoin College and Colby College in Maine, and as a visiting professor at the University of Lund, Sweden. He has received numerous honors for his teaching, including the Conoco Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching in 1993, Presidential Award in 1999, Coffman Chair of Distinguished Teaching Scholars in 2004, Carnegie Foundation Professor of the Year for Kansas in 2006, and the AAA/Oxford University Press Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching of Anthropology in 2010. His fieldwork focuses on indigenous peoples in the Western Hemisphere, and he has long served as an advocacy anthropologist on land claims and other native rights. In that capacity, Dr. Prins has been a lead expert witness in both the U.S. Senate and Canadian federal courts. He has refereed for 40 academic book publishers and journals. His own numerous academic publications appear in nine languages, with books including The Mi'kmaq: Resistance, Accommodation, and Cultural Survival (Margaret Mead Award finalist). Also trained in filmmaking, he served as president of the Society for Visual Anthropology, and has coproduced award-winning documentaries. He has been the visual anthropology editor of American Anthropologist, co-principal investigator for the U.S. National Park Service, international observer in Paraguay's presidential elections, and a research associate at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.

Dana Walrath, an award-winning writer, artist and anthropologist, is a faculty member of University of Vermont's College of Medicine. After earning her PhD in medical and biological anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania, she taught there and at Temple University. Dr. Walrath broke new ground in paleoanthropology through her work on the evolution of human childbirth. She has also written on a wide range of topics related to gender in paleoanthropology, the social production of sickness and health, sex differences, genetics, and evolutionary medicine. Her work has appeared in edited volumes and in journals such as Current Anthropology, American Anthropologist, American Journal of Physical Anthropology, and Anthropology Now. Her books include Aliceheimer's, a graphic memoir, and Like Water on Stone, a verse novel. She developed a novel curriculum in medical education at the University of Vermont's College of Medicine that brings humanism, anthropological theory and practice, narrative medicine, and professional skills to first-year medical students. She has an MFA in creative writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts and has exhibited her artwork in North America and Europe. Her recent work in the field of graphic medicine combines anthropology with memoir and visual art. Spanning a variety of disciplines, her work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Templeton Foundation, the Centers for Disease Control, the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Vermont Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts. She spent 2012-2013 as a Fulbright Scholar at the American University of Armenia and the Institute of Ethnography and Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. She is working on a second graphic memoir that combines her Aliceheimer's work with her fieldwork on aging and memory in Armenia.

Carol Ann (Bunny) McBride is an award-winning author specializing in cultural anthropology, indigenous peoples, international tourism, and nature conservation issues. Published in dozens of national and international print media, she has reported from Africa, Europe, China, and the Indian Ocean. With an MA from Columbia University, she is highly rated as a teacher and has taught at the Salt Institute for Documentary Field Studies and as visiting anthropology faculty at Principia College. Since 1996, she has been an adjunct lecturer of anthropology at Kansas State University. Her many publication credits include the books Women of the Dawn, Molly Spotted Elk: A Penobscot in Paris, and Our Lives in Our Hands: Micmac Indian Basketmakers; chapters in multiple books; and several co-authored books, including Indians in Eden and The Audubon Field Guide to African Wildlife. Working on a range of issues and projects with Maine Indian tribes since 1981, McBride received a commendation from the Maine state legislature for her research and writing on the history of Native women. Boston Globe Sunday Magazine featured a profile about her, and Maine Public Television made a documentary about her work on Molly Spotted Elk. Recently, she served as investigator for a National Park Service ethnography project and curated several museum exhibits. Her exhibit, "Indians & Rusticators," received a Leadership in History Award from the American Association for State and Local History (2012). She currently serves as president of the Women's World Summit Foundation based in Switzerland, and is wrapping up two books (with co-author Harald Prins): From Indian Island to Omaha Beach: Charles Norman Shay, Penobscot Indian War Hero; and Native Americans in Seacoast Maine: A Natural and Cultural History of Mount Desert Island.

Thank you for this book that can in time for me to return my classmate her copy, I enjoyed the information and want to thank Mr. Tim for the most encouragement of the great year of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for his being in all of our lives as we will no longer have him as our Professor in class, in person, but for his class will be on line and I encourage anyone interested to take his class on line. I also want to encourage Mr. Professor Sullivan for his belief that the Lord will take care of his children, and surely he is one of them. Good luck to Anglett and Lestor my classmates that I had the opportunity to truly enjoy this summer. It meant more than either of them will ever know.

Not terrible

Book was pretty stupid, but the class was too. Much better price here than at the university. Did learn a couple of cool things about cultures I'd never heard of before. And even though there was the normal bit of liberal leaning, this book wasn't nearly as bad as some of those they cram down your throat nowadays.

I also have to kinda compliment them on keeping this up-to-date. I know this is such an evolving field and that every day they discover new stuff. The writers were really good about keeping up with new discoveries and incorporating it well into the text.

Everyone should study anthropology and this is a great way to start.

I was surprised how quickly the book arrived and in excellent condition. The book itself I find very interesting, containing many facts and ideas I never thought of before. Much of the first few chapters focus on evolution. As a Christian it is thought provoking to set my cultural beliefs aside for a moment to look at it from a scientific perspective. I enjoyed learning about why and how we came to be the way we are. Even if you don’t buy into the theory of evolution, you cannot doubt the environment we live in and the culture we are exposed to shapes the way we think and act. Anthropology is a very interesting subject in all its many forms and this book does a great job at giving the reader an introduction to the basics of the various forms of anthropology.

About the Author
Gary White is the program director of the Respiratory Care Program at Spokane Community College, where he has been teaching since 1992. He previously held the rank of Assistant Professor of Respiratory Care at Weber State University from 1982 to 1992. He holds a master's degree from Weber State University in Education, a bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Puget Sound, and an associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy from Highline Community College. Gary's avocation is writing. He has authored three text books in respiratory care and is currently working on a manuscript for his fourth title.

I was disappointed to see that due to it said slight writing in book. I am going to keep the product due to a refund and timing is a hassle.

The book itself was fine; great for studying and such. But I rented this from Amazon and it was missing A LOT of pages. Crucial pages! Whoever had this before just tore them out! I had to keep asking my classmates to share with me when the book came to a dead end.

A real 1893 Catalog of great doors, staircases, & Trim

This is apparently a reprint of one of the really great old catalogs of Victorian Millwork! It has fabulous designs for window ornamentation, verandas, brackets, gable ends, fireplace mantels and most especially doors. Black & White sketches show an impressive variety of ideas.

This is a good reference to the time period. This is not a "how to" book but rather a period catalog expertly reproduced. This book is good for someone who is interested in creating a home with elements from the late Victorian era.

I'm a nerd for antique millwork so I LOVE this book. It's from 1893, and predictably the products it depicts are heavy on Victorian frills. Craftsman is more my taste, so I'd love it if they'd release something similar from the 1910's. Still really awesome seeing the old molding profiles, sash construction, what sorts of glass was available, etc.

Deceptively simple, infinitely functional

At first glance, a costume historian would not be impressed by this book's oversimplified patterns and lack of detail. Its renderings of the human figure are cartoonish, and no instructions for esoteric closures and construction are provided.
However, the Holkeboer directed her opus toward the theatrical costumer: an individual who must cobble together a volunteer staff, construct garments for modern bodies, and adapt to quick-changes between scenes. The patterns are necessarily basic; the cuts are nearly authentic; and the suggestions of embellishment design save the costumer much time. This book is not some tome to be displayed on a shelf; it belongs in the studio, its spine creased, its cover dog-eared, and its pages scribbled with measurements and notes. This book is a workhorse. An added bonus is its illustrative use of labels for describing many weird terms, among them: simar, barbette, picadils.
I have found in no other book of scaled patterns but this one, the instructions for THREE methods of enlargement: optical projection, grid method, and radial projection. This book also includes headgear, specialty costumes like kimono, ecclesiastical garb, and a LION! This book also prevides a wonderful equity of both men's and women's clothing which is unfortunately not represented in the body of dramatic literature. (Why are there so few women's roles? But I digress.)
The introduction and final chapter contain essential information on fitting and draping (remember: you must add your own seam allowances) and millinery and corsetry. I'd have given this book another star if I felt that it did justice to constructing corsets -- these items are too complex to build from Holkeboer's 1/8" = 1" scale. But she is absolutely correct in providing undergarment patterns if only to emphasize that they are necessary for achieving a true period look. Also, this book needs either a durable sewn or spiral binding to lie flat for usage. The glued softcover is impractical.
This book cannot function as the only book in a costumer's library; supplement your collection with costume books on period styles to achieve variety in design. As far as PfTC being indispensible to a costume shop, I don't recommend buying a copy of this book; buy TWO!

Great resource for experienced sewers

As the title of the book states, this is more for theater costumers than historic reenactors. However, I've found it to be a good resource. Rather than redraft or enlarge the patterns, I take a basic pattern that is fit to the wearer already (often a commercial pattern) and use this book on how to modify the shape. I like the fact that there are illustrations of the completed garment, along with the patterns.

An invaluable resource.

This book is the most comprehensive, single-volume collection of historical patterns (from Ancient Egypt through 1915) available today for men's and women's costumes. While the pattern designs are very simplistic, present little detail on closures or embellishments and present only general instructions on construction, they are functional and very easy to make, represent nearly authentic cuts and effectively achieve the intended essential look for their specific period.
Each pattern in the book is presented in three sizes, and for each individual piece of a complete garment a label is often attached, giving its historical name and a brief description of its appearance or use. As a bonus, patterns for specialty costumes (fantasy, religious, Chinese, Japanese, and animals), undergarments, hats, wigs and masks are included, and its Introduction explains, in a step-by-step format, costuming techniques such as enlarging patterns, fitting designs, and draping.
This book can also serve, with just a little imagination, as an infinite source of ideas to help you create your own patterns, although you will have to refer to other books on period specific costumes to give your work finishing details like ornaments, trims, and other accessories.
The only weak point of the book is its glued soft-cover binding, which is completely inadequate for the spine-creasing use to which it's sure to be subjected.
If you either work for the theater or just enjoy making your own costumes, you will find this book to be an indispensable part of your library.

About the Author
Verena Lindenau-Stockfisch was born on February 6, 1976 in Mei�en (Saxony) and grew up in the today's known New Laender in Germany. After her graduation as an International Management Assistant in 2003, she was working in an export company, specialised on turn-key hospital projects mainly in the Middle East. In 2009, she graduated from her extra-occupational but full-time BA studies that were important to improve her professional skills in the fields of Business Administration. Various stays abroad, among others in Great Britain and South Africa, as well as the BA studies mainly held in English, contributed to her language skills and enabled her to work on an academic level. Already during her work as a Project Manager, she gained comprehensive experience with regard to structuring, elaboration and budgeting of international hospital projects. Above all, her position demanded the ability of leading a project team and cooperation with engineers, medical planners and architects and to ensure optimal process structuring in a hospital from the very beginning. At a German-Arabic Health & Economy Congress in 2006, she became first acquainted with the definition Lean Healthcare. Since that day, she has been fascinated and intensively studied the topic Lean Management in Hospitals. Since January 2011, Ms Lindenau-Stockfisch has been working for a hospital near Leipzig. In her position as a Manager for Strategic Planning she is accepting the challenge of introducing and implementing the Lean Methodology there.

Highly recommended for the serious cyclist of any age

Highly informative, through and well written, this book goes into every element of lifestyle relevant to cycling performance. Probably not worth reading for those who would just like to stay fit and enjoy an occasional recreational ride, but well worth the investment for anyone who wants to focus on performance, at any age. Friel brings decades of experience and research to support his analysis and provides a wealth of references. A must for every library. After reading the Kindle version, I just had to have the print version.

The #1 cycling training book of all time.

I bought this book (3rd edition) when I first started road cycling. I used the knowledge from this book to develop my own training plan and start racing. After applying the principles of this book, the results have been incredible, I went from being dropped on group rides to leading the pack and racing with great results. Joe Friel's training bible lays out your training regimen with the proper balance of intensity, duration and recovery to maximize results. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to break the limits of their cycling fitness. It is certain that if you follow the training cycles as outlined including base, build, recovery, peak, and race phases you WILL improve your cycling and be faster and have more endurance than you ever had.

Lots of good information but I felt it was scattered and I ...

Lots of good information but I felt it was scattered and I had to wade through a lot of material to get to it. I was really interested in trying some of the workouts but was disappointed in the lack of details in the "workout menu" in the appendix. The author describes workouts throughout the book but to get all the details you need to flip back and forth, which is annoying. Lastly I did not care for the author's recommendation of the Paleo diet. There's plenty of scientific evidence that debunks this diet. I start to question other material that is presented in the book as truth. In general there's not much research cited throughout the book.
