The Master Speaks

Don't know Fred? What rock have you been living under? He's the excellent MCN columnist and the last word on motorcycle touring. This fine, beautifully produced book proves his skills.

If you don't read, study and absorb this book and Rau's condensed wisdom of decades and hundreds of thousands of touring miles, and have problems on your next ride, don't come whining to me. He has seen it all, from sublime to obscene.

Rau defines touring, establishes priorities, helps you avoid problems and plan your tour, suggests packing, picking the right gear and accessorizing your machine, identifies the pitfalls that await you, and pinpoints miscellaneous essentials. He uses many photos to illustrate the multi-faceted aspects of touring and to identify specific bikes to choose, across the full spectrum of available machines. One point he emphasizes, neglected by too many manufacturers: range. He nails Harley-Davidson to the wall on this issue.

Rau's writing style is comfortable and his liberal anecdotes ragingly entertaining, citing touring highs and lows in ways that endear one to him. Too numerous to cite in a short review, but one married couple faces matrimonial and motorcycling doom, trying to get three times too much luggage onto their bike.

Two omissions deserve your attention. Rau points out that too much motorcycle, or the latest thrill, may not be for you. But he misses two huge issues that confront average riders: a bike that is too big and heavy (drop it, riding alone, and you'll walk home); and the insidious problem of aerodynamics, using side and (especially) tail bags that move the center of pressure aft and create serious instability at speed. Other than these minor matters, he nails it. Highly recommended.

A bit of a disappointment

I had a chance to see meet Fred Rau and listen to him speak at the Americade Bike Rally this past summer. I very much enjoyed it. I also look forward to reading his articles in Motorcycle Consumer News. That said, This book was quite a let down. It was mostly about Mr Rau's opinions on Motorcycle camping much of which can be found in many other Motorcycle Touring Books on the market and for a much better price. I found Mr Rau to be somewhat full of himself in this book. I found his "I know everything that there is to know" style somewhat grating and hard to read....As anyone who has been riding bikes for awhile will tell you....There is always something new to learn. One can find the nuts and bolts of motorcycle camping in other books for a MUCH better price.

Great Book Full of Advice On Touring

I liked reading this book. I am new into touring. I like to go around Italy with my motorcycle two up wit the Mrs

This book gave me a better picture to hopefully rig up the gear and tackle ups and downs that we may expect out on the road

The writer in a Goldwing man but in my situation I am only going out just for weekend breaks in Italy but I checked the Goldwings out and I have to say that true they are the ultimate machine But as I said, I guess this motorcycle will be too heavy for me and my cruiser with a good adjustable rear shocker will do the job fine for me and the Mrs. Obviously I have to double check how much stuff she is intended to take out :). well this book prepares you with everything on this subject as well. Great sense of humour from the writer as for sure he have seen in all happening in more then 30 years in the saddle

I highly recommend this book to new incomers hopefully you will enjoy reading in as I did

About the Author
Dr. John Pohl has conducted numerous archaeological excavations and surveys in Mexico and Central America as well as the Catalan region of southern France. Dr. Pohl is noted for bringing the ancient past to life using a wide variety of innovative skills and techniques ranging from museum exhibitions for Princeton University, the Getty, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to film productions for the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, the BBC and Dreamworks. In addition to his work in education through public media, he currently serves as Adjunct Full Professor in the Department of Art History at UCLA.

Excellent visual insight

Well written with excellent pictorial information. And one who has done any kind of research into this period of history and was curious about how things actually looked would be very interested in seeing good detailed and written descriptions of maps, battle suits, weaponry and other items of the period. A good overview of the events during this period in Mexico's history, but the book is more valuable as a visual insight. Would highly recommend this as an ideal companion book to read with a more detailed historical book of this period in history, such as Bernal Diaz del Castillo's book of the conquest or William H. Prescott's wonderfully written History of the Conquest of Mexico.

A good general history of the Conquest

Aztecs and Conquistadors is a book from the deservedly-famed Osprey Publishers that contains the full text of three earlier books, two of the Warrior books (Aztec Warrior and Conquistador) and the Essential History: The Spanish Invasion of Mexico 1519-1521.

Aztec Warrior is exactly what it sounds like, a history of the development and fighting abilities of Aztec fighting men and how they were used and lead against their enemies in pre-Columbian Mexico. The Conquistadors does the same for the Spanish warriors who defeated the Aztecs. I do have a problem with that chapter, in that I hoped for some information on how the Spanish fought in Europe as well as in the New World. The last chapter is some very well-done coverage of Cortes' conquest of Mexico. It thankfully avoids the typical trap of seeking to judge past lives and cultures by modern standards. It treats both the Aztecs and the Spanish with a mix of sympathy and criticism. They also make sure to mention the role played by other Mexican Indians in the Conquest, with the army of 100,000 Indian allies who joined Cortes to destroy Tenochtitlan.

A decent book, rather better then many another history of the Conquest, and it has the usual incredibly well-done full color Osprey illustrations. You won't be sorry to get this one.

Hard- To- Find Book Found

Dad would be proud.

I'm Jeff Wittmann, one of 5 sons of Wendell Wittmann, the bombadier of Harold "Robbie" Robinson's B-24 bomber crew. I've had this book for years, but only recently sat down and read it cover to cover. Robbie actually personally gave it to my mother after my dad was killed in a car crash. How's that for irony? Surviving 30 missions over Nazi Germany only to be killed by an idiot who can't drive. But I digress... My father never talked much about his time in the war other than vague references. I would always take that to mean that it was no big deal. In my mind, he would fly over to Germany every few days, drop a few bombs, be back in England in time for afternoon tea and crumpets. After reading this book with its extremely intense decriptions of the harrowing experiences of the 445th Bomb Group in the skies over France and Germany, I realize it's nothing short of a miracle that I'm even walking the earth today.

This almost daily and highly detailed account of the crew of the B-24 named Bullet Serenade kept me up past midnight several nights. It's a WWII story but it's also very much a love story of a young man and his new bride separated by a terrible and bloddy war. Robbie's undying love and devotion to her are an inspiration as it keeps him going through his 30 missions. My parents were in an identical situation during that time so Robbie's story is very much that of my father's.

The tales told of others in the 445th are very entertaining as well. Jimmy Stewart (yes that Jimmy Stewart) the squadron was a great guy who was not content to send his guys out on missions while he stayed behind safe at the base. Jimmy went along on some of the most dangerous runs leading his men into battle, much to the chagrin of Air Force Brass. What a loss that would have been if he were shot down and worse captured and used by the Nazi propaganda machine. And there's Dabbs the tail gunner, who's sexual exploits through WWII England warrant a book all by themselves. Dad never mentioned Dabbs.....

"A Reason to Live"

This is a book that shows the sacrifices that were made by the WWII generation to protect the freedoms we share as Americans today. Mr. Robinson gives a unique perspective to the bombing raids over Europe and the great lose of American life. There are numerous books on the market discussing the decision making from the pilot or wing commander's point of view. This perspective comes from an enlisted man, a true "citizen soldier" that was asked by his friends and neighbors to defend the American way of life.

Many times throughout this book, I felt that I was in the plane beside Mr. Robinson and the other crew members as they flew dangerous mission over France and Germany. The vivid recollections and attention to detail makes this a great read for those that enjoy and thrive on WWII history. The writing style and explanation makes this a great read for those all from the WWII historians to the average reader. The personal story of a newly married young man that has to leave his wife and fight in one of the most dangerous spots in WWII will make you want to cry, laugh, leave you on the edge or your seat and never want to put the book down.

This book also offers a special bonus. It gives you a glimpse of the war time service of actor Jimmy Stewart. Stewart had such a private attitude about his war time service that not much was written (or known) about this time in his life. Mr. Robinson shares many Stewart stories that could only be told properly by someone there. This is a book that will hold a special place on my bookshelf.
