Fascinating but scattered

This book begins very well and no doubt the author is a scholar of immense learning and integrity, but eventually the book flounders in poorly explained speculations.

The opening is very well done, featuring a concise and insightful history of early India, speculation on who exactly were the famed 'Aryans' who allegedly wrote the Vedas, including state of the art linguistic techniques for tracing the historical movements of peoples which I found really fascinating. He them summarizes, in a chapter each, the four Vedas traditionally recognized as genuine (which I take to mean: considered "revealed" or of divine origin in some capacity, anyway). Up to this point the book is a great introduction the ancient India in general and the Vedas in particular.

From here it starts to get more and more scattered, and the bizarre language used becomes more and more apparent. Staal boasts early on in the book of being fluent in 5 or 6 languages (if memory serves me the author is Dutch), and while generally grammatically correct, the English is intensely bizarre at times - I read voluminously, but I found that over and over again I had to re-read sentences - not because of their lofty thoughts or complexity, but simply because the phrasing was so alien and unlike anything a native English speaker would write. Don't get me wrong, his English is still great, but if you read the book you will probably discover this for yourself and it can be frustrating at times.

But this is a minor criticism. The major thing that keeps this a 'good' book when it could have been great is, perhaps ironically, Staal's overabundance of enthusiasm for his subject. As the book progresses, he just can't help jumping from his own adventures and research in India, to speculations about the Aryans, to updating us about theories of bird song and how they may relate to what mantra really is, to a painstakingly detailed linguistic analysis of one phrase of one mantra - and so on. Staal may know what he's talking about, but I doubt almost anyone else does. And once again, I don't think this is because his theories or insights are too complex (though one could certainly argue I'm just too dim to follow along) - the problem, rather, is that Staal is that excitable professor you once had in university, completely in love with his subject and unable to fully channel that passion into a focused and cogent presentation of the material itself, much less his own boundary-pushing thoughts on the matter. This is probably the most forgivable and indeed admirable flaw a scholar could possess - but it remains a major one, and does not make for very good or clear reading through much of the book.

Still, there is a fair bit of great stuff in here and before it goes off track, the opening section is great. Recommended with the above qualifications.

Get Acquainted with Our Future and Our Past

Frits Staal is not only a reliable Vedic scholar, but a revolutionary one as well. Mantras are meaningless (try that on for size). Civilization will move forward now through developments in knowledge and technology in India and China. 'Om' is the same as 'hum'—never thought of that (in fact 'hum' is a Sanskrit word). A book for both scholar and layperson alike. Very readable and yet in depth on the 4 (not just 3) Vedas, history of the spoked wheel, Hinduism, Buddhism, rituals and mythology. Staal died in 2012, and what a gift he left us—a lifetime of knowledge in accessible, personal, and human terms.

A must read for ministers

Exley deals directly with the spiritual as well as the psychological aspects of ministers falling into sin but does it in a scriptural, compassionate manner. He avoids technical language that requires keeping a dictionary at hand. At the same time he calls the entire church to accounts as to the way sexual sin has been handled by churches and denominations. Every minister should read it, it should be required by all seminary and Bible school students.

The Madness of King Burroughs

Mr. Stevens has revealed his genius, or insanity by documenting a comprehensive library of books owned, read, reviewed, or quoted by Beat Godfather William S. Burroughs. On a personal note, if I need a book to read, something discharged from main stream booksellers, I pick up this mad intoxicant, flip through the pages and discover a wealth of diverse literature on subjects I never imagined I'd even look into. The discipline involved, along with tireless research has made this a must own for anyone interested in books, burroughs, or writing. If you hate all three, well then I can't help you.

Stevens provides plenty of context on how and where a good number of these books (may) have surfaced in Burroughs' own work, as well biographical information (like his relationships with the authors). There is even a bibliography of the books Burroughs wrote blurbs for. An invaluable resource.

A terrific Burroughs resource...

Burroughs is like a lake with no bottom. Put on your scuba gear and dive into his psyche...if you dare. Scarey at first to swim in a mind so unfettered...then, once you realize he is a humorist with a cosmic perspective, you follow his dark illuminations into the depth of a uniquely American mysticism that encompasses both heaven and hell. Nothing like him existed before, except in the dreams that Melville, Jack London, and William James didn't dare put on paper. I suspect Mark Twain would have been a Burroughs aficionado had he lived another fifty years...and they are sharing dry jests even as we speak, on the undersea bridge to infinity.

I was fortunate to receive a copy of this book when it was passing hand-to-hand in manuscript form. It's a unique resource for Burroughs scholars. Two centuries from now it will still be in print. A bow to Michael Stevens for his determination and dedication.

About the Author
Sumitrajit (Sumit) Dhar has studied Audiology and Hearing Science at the Mumbai University (India), Utah State University, and Purdue University. At Purdue, Sumit completed his Ph.D. in 2001 under the tutelage of Professors Glenis Long and Arnold Tubis. Between 1992 and 2000, Sumit has held several clinical positions as audiologist, audiology-supervisor, and clinic manager. His first academic appointment was at Indiana University, Bloomington.

James W. Hall III received his PhD in audiology from Baylor College of Medicine under the direction of Dr. James Jerger. Since then, he has held clinical and academic audiology positions at major university medical schools. Dr. Hall is now Clinical Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Communicative Disorders at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he maintains a clinical practice and is an instructor in the Doctor of Audiology on-site and distance learning programs. Dr. Hall s main research interests are auditory neurophysiology, auditory processing disorders, early identification of hearing loss in infants, and tinnitus/hyperacusis. Dr. Hall lectures internationally on these topics.

It's all in the first 25 pages!

I was very excited when I came across this particular book. This was exactly the right book - looking at the title - coming at the right moment for me. I could use it to help me work through a current problem!

Maybe my expectations were too high, but I dived into it with a passion. The introduction was insightful and right on target. This is terrific! Chapter 1; Surviving the Customer Revolution, was as good a review of this topic as I've read anywhere. It succeeded in defining what a customer centric organisation could look like and brought some real clarity to this part of the puzzle. If you've ever tried to explain the difference between a traditional product centric company and a customer centric one then you'll know what I mean.

Chapter 2 though, How Much Is Enough, was the beginning of the decline. The author attempts to define different levels of customer centricity necessary for your company and, for me, falls foul of too much detail and too much process - clearly reflective of the authors' obvious expertise and familiarity with organisational design. From there on it continued to be a struggle for me. The case studies were terrific and there was some real insight, but the solutions were too formulaic and linear to be of real value.

I came away from the book concerned that I'd missed something. I thought that customers would drive what level of customisation would be required in order to deliver value, and thereby improve business performance. Perhaps I was wrong!

Was I disappointed? Not at all. Worth reading even if the best is right up front!

COMPREHENSIVE, IN-DEPTH, THOUGHTFUL BOOK!

In contrast to product-centric, a customer-centric firm must be organized around the customer. This means going further than "customer focused" initiatives. This comprehensive, in-depth and thoughtful book begins by exploring the structures and philosophy involved in being customer-centric. Galbraith then details the different types of customer relationship strategies, following which he offers a guide to determining the level of customer-centricity (three levels are proposed) that would best serve the reader's company. The specific elements for achieving each of the three levels, from lightest to most intensive, are presented, along with guidelines for implementing actions ("solution strategy") required. Solution strategies vary by scale and scope, depending on the intensity of customer-centricity needed.

In all, the book delves into ways that organizations can design their strategy, structure, and processes to strengthen their position in the market and grow. Technology, with emphasis on its implementation and connectivity with customers, gets major attention. Much of the book presents engrossing cases (IBM, Proctor & Gamble, Nokia), which are extremely informative and provide a plethora of insights. This is an outstanding work in its content, organization of material, and style of writing. Very highly recommended.

extremely interesting topic for me - everybody is claiming that being customer centric will make the difference in the near future. so i dived into the book with high expectations - some of them fulfilled. unfortunately - for a B2C professional - the book is very much oriented into B2B. as a result, even tough i retained some ideas as food for thought, i am still looking for the right lecture on this topic

REVEALING

I agree with the reviewer who is an admissions officer that this book could have been about any private college. The methodology and procedures are the same everywhere, I am sure.
The book only reinforced what I already believed...that parents of those kids who are not star material are the ones who end up paying the bills for those who are at elite private colleges. I am one of those parents who paid! AS Steinberg says: "To help offset their financial losses due to increased costs for financial aid, colleges initiated an intense search for other 'customers' who could pay full price, whether from the U.S. or abroad."
I think the author did a marvelous job of making this a really interesting book, and immediately recommended it to my sister and brother, who both have boys in high school now. I did warn them, however, that what they read might be somewhat discouraging.
First, these admissions officers are very subjective (and how could they be anything else?)with a huge case load to handlein a very short period of time.
Second, I was appalled that one of the most important issues for college admission staffs seems to be how their rejection/yield rate is perceived by U.S. News and World Report.
And third, the way admissions standards are tweaked for academic stars or to achieve diversity can seem very unfair to those who have sons who fall into neither of these categories (a star or a minority).
I think there are many lessons about the college application process to be learned from reading this book. Perhaps the most important lesson is not to set your heart on one school.
I suggest this book as "must" reading for parents, students, and high school guidance counselors.

What is better? The overachieving 6 or underachieving 8?

First, let me say that I thought that this was an excellent book and would recommend it to anyone who is at all interested in the college admissions process. Second, I was surprised at how many of the reviewers seemed shocked--shocked!--that applicants got bonus points for coming from minority backgrounds. Was this some kind of revelation? However one thing that surprised me a little bit is how--even moving beyond race entirely--the more advantages you have had in life, the more disadvantageous it will be for your admissions process. For example, I was unaware that having successful parents would be, in essence, held against you on the theory that more would be expected of you. While other reviewers have (jokingly?) said that they would advise their white kids not to check the "Caucasian" box, I might advise my (still very young) kids to say that their parents have been unemployed their whole life.
I suppose that the main issue which this whole process really boils down to is the following: As a college applicant, is it more important to succeed in life relative to the world around you (i.e. relative to your classmates, to others of your race, to others of your geographical area, to your own parents' life and accomplishments, etc.) or is it more important to succeed absolutely and not on a relative scale. This book clearly informs us that the answer is the former and not the latter. Whether that should be the answer is another question.
For example, say that a student's entire life could be distilled into 2 numbers each on a sliding scale from 1-10. The first number is simply your academic performance (grades, SAT's, course load, etc.) The second number is your background (race, economic circumstances, gender, etc.) In the case of Wesleyan, it seems clear to me that they would rather have a student whose first number was, say, a 6 if his or her second was a 2 (take Mig for example in Steinberg's book) than a student whose first number was an 8 if the second number was a 9 or 10 (take Tiffany Wang for example). Whether that is the right approach is certainly a legitimate issue for discusion and I'm not saying that it's not.
I suppose that one of the things that would be interesting to know (even though one never really can know of course) is whether those numbers will change in the future. For example, if one were to know that Mig would always be a 6 and Tiffany would always be an 8, would that change the analysis as to which is the right approach? I suspect that part of the reason that a school like Wesleyan would favor the overachieving 6 over the underachieving 8 is due to the hope or expectation that those trends will continue in the future and that one day the 6 will actually be ahead of the 8. And maybe that's the way it works. Who knows.

A Scary Thriller and a Wonderful Read

A must read if anyone close to you is thinking about applying to one of America's elite colleges. (Full disclosure demands that I admit that next fall my son will enter college, and his first choice at that.) A few facts to keep in mind before panic takes over.
1) Of the 3000 colleges in USA, one can find at least 100 good colleges, many nearby and easy to get into, where one can get a fine education.
2) There are only about 50 or so elite colleges that play these admission games. I call them the Orwellian colleges based on George Orwell's book, not 1984, but Animal Farm. You remember the famous quote, "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others." Animal Farm should be required reading of all admission officers. Did Orwell saw this coming?
3) This book illustrates in a gripping story all the ups and downs of the admission process at one of the Orwellian schools. The racial and ethnic preferences can be disturbing if you were expecting merit to matter. Jonathan Kozol questions on the back cover, "Whether it is actually a 'meritocracy' at all." That is a euphemism for "It sure ain't."
4) Are all the elite colleges like that? I am afraid so. Only a few elite have avoided this fate. CalTech is still strictly merit. The CalTech admission officer said recently, "Race, ethnicity, gender, religion, etc. do not count at all." And Cornell gives a fairer shake than the other Ivies. My alma mater, MIT, is about the worst of all. MIT's admission policies are abysmal. If you can believe the president (Don't ever believe admission people!), over 75% of those accepted at MIT are based on preferences. I had thought it was only about 60%. No wonder that MIT has dumbed down so much that a significant percentage of freshman are taking remedial math and physics.
5) One last caveat: "Assume nothing!" Admission is one big ...shoot. Just because a friend who is a weak student gets into Harvard doesn't mean that you will even though you are a much better candidate. This is a common error. Acceptance is like a lottery. In fact, a giant lottery makes more sense and would save millions in admission staff.
6) "And who plays God in America?", a question posed by Samuel Freedman in a blurb. Admission staff is a motley collection. It includes young temps who do it for a few years until they get tired of reading thousands of applications and older ones who have variegated backgrounds. One was rumored to be in the federal witness protection program, probably not what one was expecting to find in a judge of one's abilities.
7) Are there great colleges or universities that are readily accessible? Two come to mind.
a) University of Chicago. It is probably better than any of the Ivies and much easier to get into. A word of warning: it is rigorous. This frightens away all but the serious student. No free ride there!
b) Reed College in Portland, OR. It is also rigorous and serious. It requires a comprehensive exam and a thesis from all. No wonder so many go on to graduate school from Reed.
