About the Author
Richard E. Blahut is the Henry Magnuski Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the recipient of many awards including the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal (1998), the Tau Beta Pi Daniel C. Drucker Eminent Faculty Award, and the IEEE Millennium Medal. He was named a Fellow of IBM Corporation in 1980 (where he worked for over 30 years) and was elected to the US National Academy of Engineering in 1990.

Channel Coding gone wild

I used this textbook for an introduction to Channel Coding class I took (graduate level). I think that the material is difficult, but this book is remarkably clear, considering that. I had no experience with Galois Fields or any of that kind of math before starting with this book, but I was able to grasp it. I think the main thing missing in this book are good summaries for each chapter, giving highlights of the important stuff. Sometimes it's hard to get an overall picture of the material, I got bogged down in math sometimes. Visually, the book is beautiful, good fonts, charts, etc...

A Tough Slog

At first I really liked this book, but the farther I progressed, the more confusing it got. By the time I got to somthing practical, I was completely lost. A couple of times, when I was having trouble understanding something, I went back and re-read a preceding chapter, but that was not enough. I was reading this on my own, rather than in a class, so I had nobody to ask for clarification when something was confusing. Maybe it would be okay in a course.
For the theorems, he doesn't state the asssumption. Instead, the reader is expected to know them because of the variable names. For example, because "p" was chosen to represent a prime number at some point in the book, I think that it is always a prime number from then on. However, he never stated that this is the case, so I'm not sure it is true. Sometimes a variable would start off fairly general, but he would add some assumptions about it for a later theorem. For subsequent uses of that variable, I would not know whether the variable was being used in its more general or more specific sense. The uncertainty about the meanings of variables just got to be too much for me.
A glossary would be helpful. In particular, it would be great to have a list of all the meanings of "primitive".

About the Author
George Ritzer is Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, where he has been a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher and won a Teaching Excellence award by the American Sociological Association, and in 2004, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by LaTrobe University, Melborune, Australia. He has served as Chair of the American Sociological Association's Sections on Theoretical Sociology and organizations and Occupations. He held the UNESCO Chair in Social Theory at the Russian Academy of Sciences, a Fulbright-Hay Chair at York University in Canada, and a Fulbright-Hays award to the Netherlands. He has been Scholar-in-Residence at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study and the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences. Dr. Ritzer's main theoretical interests lie in metatheory as well as applied social theory. In metatheory, his contributions include Metatheorizing in Sociology(Lexington Books, 1991), Sociology: A Multiple Paradigm Science (Allyn and Bacon, 1975, 1980), and Toward an Integrated Sociological Paradigm (Allyn and Bacon). Professor Ritzer is perhaps best known for the McDonaldization of Society (4/e, 2004); translated into more than a dozen languages) and several related books (also with a number of translations, including Expressing America: A Critique of the Global Credit Card Society (1995), Enchanting a Disenchanted World: Revolutionizing the Means of Consumption (2/e, 2005),The Globalization of Nothing (2/e, 2007), and (with Craig Lair) Outsourcing: Globalization and Beyond. He edited the Encyclopedia of Social Theory (2005), and is the founding editor of the Journal of Consumer Culture. He just completed editing the eleven-volume Encyclopedia of Sociology (2007) and The Blackwell Companion to Globalization (2007). In 2006, McGraw-Hill published the second edition of Professor Ritzer's Contemporary Sociological Theory and Its Classic Roots: The Basics. In 2007, McGraw-Hill will publish the seventh edition of Modern Sociological Theory, and the fifth edition of Classical Sociological Theory. The latter texts, as well as this one, have been translated into a number of languages.

An excellent introductory text

Ritzer and Goodman's simply-titled Sociological Theory is an excellent introductory text for that field. At nearly 800 pages, it offers a very good overview of both European and American sociological theory, without being overlong and cumbersome. The authors give a broad overview of the origins of sociological theory in the early classical theorists -- Marx, Weber, Durkheim, and Simmel -- all of whom have an entire chapter devoted to them. They also devote chapters that give a broad overview of the rise of sociological theory in both Europe and America. After that, they devote a chapter to each of the major schools of sociological theory. They also address various other issues important to the field, such as macro-micro integration, agency-structure issues, and modernism vs. postmodernism. The book is very well-written and even manages to be entertaining as well as informative. It is also quite comprehensive, covering all of the subjects mentioned above, among others, quite well: a nice, broad overview is given of almost all of the things important to sociological theory. Concise biographical portraits of major theorists are also offered, which often serve to add a distinct and charming personal touch to the sometimes abstract narratives. Of course, the book is not comprehensive: that is beyond the scope of the book. Within it, the authors continually stress the importance of reading the original sources as well as other overviews in order to get a balanced and complete view of each theorist, theory, and idea. Anyone looking for a great general overview of sociological theory, however, need look no further than this.

Excellent as a standard book for theory

I used this book in its 4th edition as an undergraduate and I am very glad I kept it, because I used it extensively in my graduate theory class last semester. Ritzer makes it easy to understand and appreciate the classical theorists and I would highly recommend it as a good general book for students.

physics finally in understandable terms!

I really loved this book! As with most everything in science - you can explain all day long the "what it is" but never the "how and why it is". With anything involving PHYSICS someone can explain the "whats", but it's so complicated that there is no comprehension of the "what" much less try to discover the "how and why". Layman's terms are fantastic. Zee really does a great job in making it interesting and fun!

As a naturally creative person I already see imagery in everything. So wasn't too impressed by this book. This book does get the creative juices flowing though if your are looking for ways to come up with inspiration. You need to look at the book as a tool to help you practice finding inspiration. You may be disappointed if you are thinking it will offer you a mind bending experience, but its an interesting concept. Has a lot of pages showing seemingly random imagery (like crinkled up paper) then finding shapes, faces, animals etc in them.

An essential for those in the field, but not a significant update from the last edition

Necessity for those in the field of cytogenetics. Not a whole lot of new material from the last update. Abnormal microarrays still do not specify gender while normal ones do...perhaps that can be rectified in a future edition. The major new change is incorporating sequence variants into the karyotype string, which may not be that useful in practice but is in line with ABMGs new approach to folding cytogenetics and molecular genetics into one combined specialty.
